Syncing to an external device using the KP3.

Post by dj-in-cali »

Hello to all, I'm new to this forum and look forward in participating in this community.

I've been using the kaoss pad 3 for a year only as an effect unit. Now I'm trying to us it to sync
the audio coming out of my mixer with a drum machine via midi clock as well. I've been able to synce the drum section of the KP3 with my zoom drum machine with no problem. I lowered or raise the BPM, and the drum machine followed pretty accurately. However, I'm having a hard time syncing the audio coming out from my mixer, to sync with the drum machine. Is there a specific way to do this? My connections are as follows.....master out from my mixer to line in on the KP3. Line out from the KP3 to my PA. Midi out from the KP3 into midi in on my zoom drum machine. I've seen this video demonstrating how to sync to a drum machine with a CDJ 400, using a device maid by Red sound called a sound Bite Micro. Towards the end in of the video, it's mentioned that the same thing could be done with the KP3. Any feedback or instructions on how to do this would be appreciated?

Here is the clip, and Thanks in advance! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JRpExKYumM

I'm guessing with the KP3, it would rely on the autobpm detection of the unit. however, ive read that the kp3's not that accurate in that respect unless your audio has clear transients for the beat detection. Some people make do with the tap tempo function to sync but that's another skill to master though. i figure it all boils down to the redsound being very accurate and this makes for a locked sync more than what the kp3 can offer. I'd suggest that if you're using CDJ's, you'd be better off manually syncing the CDJ to midied boxes. Thing is, the redsound dictates the midi clock from the audio it gets that's why everything syncs.

Try enabling the auto bpm detection of the kp3 and see if the bpm detected translates to the midi clock it's sending out. that might work

Yeah, I tried using the auto BPM all I get is train wreck. I Use vinyl, Serato, VDJ, or torq to be exact. I have synced in the traditional way of mixing, but would be nice to for midi clock to take care of keeping the drum machine in sync with whatever I'm playing. I'll fool with it a bit more, hopefully I could fine a work around.

Thank for your quick responce.

no problem. i guess it's really cuz of the weak bpm detection of the kp... oh well.. Good luck!
