Chord pads, what for?

Post by kikedeolivos »

Hi,

In your opinion, what are the 4 chord pads useful for?

Thanks

To play chords.

Now serious, I use them just in some times when I don't want to miss a chord, but that is me because I still need to practice a lot. For a well trained keyboardist there should be of little use.

Nice thing would have been if Kord have made them available as assignable pads. I don't know if they can be, thought.

It would be nice if one could have them send patch changes instead.

That's a great idea! Maybe an OS upgrade could give the option to use them for favorites.

I used them once in my band to hit some chords that I needed to hold (using the sustain pedal) and pitch bend down while playing something else, but my pride got in the way...

Do you guys think that an OS / Firmware upgrade would allow -in case Korg decides to - more functionality?

Because just to memorize chords, I think it's kinda lame.

Maybe a global switch that will make the chord bank function as a chord pad or as STS pads, a-la-pa (Arranger's Single Touch Setting feature). Just an idea.

never used on m50, used a little bid more the pad on the M3.

i would substitute this chord trigger with other knobs or with on/off functions for IFX

Guys,

The question remains unanswered:

Do you think that an OS / Firmware upgrade would allow -in case Korg decides to - more functionality?

absolutely.
However, I think it is unlikely that KORG will do this. They are 'chord pads', for a reason. It would be nice if they could be assigned to CCs though as controller switches for effect parameters etc.

yes for sure...

instead mapping the button to several Note On MIDI command korg could decide to map it to any other internal message to sound engine.

Hi folks,

Great ideas here. I just wanted to make sure it's clear that the Chord Triggers CAN be assigned to CC messages, but only to control external MIDI devices or software. You can do this in Global mode... Press PAGE SELECT, then touch MIDI, then touch the Ext. 2 tab to customize them.

Now, just to fan the flames... I'd imagine that as long as you have an M50 plugged into a computer, running a utility like MIDIOX, you could have one CC message trigger another one, and essentially loop it back to the M50.

Hi Rich,

I was thinking about more functionality with the pads without hooking it to a computer, ie, using the M50 as a standalone, only keyboard for live performance. Choosing, for example, 4 favorite combis and/or programs for instant recall during live performance would be great.

Thanks

on this point, Korg has already implemented in the X50 a "favourite patches" mechanism: in the X50 is possible to assign to buttons 0...9 one specific program or combi (and mixed assignment are allowed, i.e. button 0 linked to a program and button 1 linked to a combi) and during live performance, selecting the favourite patch mode, it is possible to recall patch just pressing once such buttons.

i do not understand while this same mechanism (that is only software) is not still ported in M3/M50 OS.

That's exactly what I'm talking about; didn't know the M50 doesn't have that basic feature.

Not to sidestep too much, but are the chord pads supposed to light up when you push them? Mine don't.
