The one thing the PADS don't do!

Hi everyone!
Very often at our Gigs, we do Dance Remixes of songs, which is often simply triggering Pad Drum Loops over the top of SMF's at various times (sometimes muting the existing SMF Drum track, sometimes not)
Anyway....
Why is it that you can't:
a) Start the PAD Drum loop, and THEN start an SMF?
and more importantly:
b) CONTINUE the Pad Drum loop when you start (and crossfade to) a 2nd SMF - even after pressing SHIFT/PLAY so as to start the 2nd SMF "in synch" as it were, with the first.
Is there ANY way to do this AT ALL???
Some Tip/Trick or Workaround?
If not, can you at LEAST do this with the PA2x???
In other words: Can you start and stop the Pad(s) independently of the SMF's starting and stopping - let them "Run Free".....?
