"After a Thousand Days"

Post by jgsidak »

This new song, "After a Thousand Days," was composed and recorded January 8-9, 2011, on the Oasys with no external signal processing or sequencing. Scroll to the bottom of this webpage:

I use a fretless bass on the Oasys to play chords rather than single notes in the bass line by assigning the bass to the same MIDI channel as the initial chord progression in the introduction. The chiming of the guitar is accomplished by adjusting the velocity downward to just above the point at which the harmonic sounds, but before the normal tone of the "string" rings out.

The melody unfolds in five paragraphs of 24 measures, rather than the more typical 16 measures. The structure of 24 allows for the beat to hint at 3/4 at times. For the drumming and percussion, I was thinking of the feel of Pat Mastelotto.

Nice looong delay on the guitar-sound!
What I did not like that much was the sound of the violin - it's too scratchy for my taste (but suspect it's an original Korg-sound - as most of them come with lots of "wire").

Charlie,

Thanks. It is the stock Oasys solo violin ("ribbon" is in the name, which I can't quite recall at the moment). I agree that it is scratchy. Maybe some EQ can take off some of the high frequency to soften the sound. I wanted to avoid chorus or delay on the solo violin, so that it did not become sonic mush.

By the way, I have never used any sounds other than those than come standard with the Oasys. I should experiment with some new ones, but I never tried to load new programs or combis.

Greg
