Bold and impressive move by Korg.

Post by curvebender »

I couldn't believe my eyes or ears when I found out that Korg had released a new workstation synthesizer. I thought hardware synths were a thing of the past, and that the only companies that would manufacture anything with keys were in the midi controller business.

I am impressed beyond belief that Korg decided to present such a powerful synthesizer as the Kronos, in these days of cheap computers and software.

Now, obviously, all Oasys owners would love to see one or two of the new synths to find their way into our beloved machines, but that's equally obviously never going to happen. (I would personally kill for the new EP engine..)

But there's one soothing thought for me in all this: the release of the Kronos gives me such a better chance to replace my Oasys, should it ever be necessary.

As some of you might remember, I had to repair my Oasys a while ago and it cost me an arm and a leg. Ever since, I'm having nightmares about something else breaking down.. I almost bought an Oasys 76 for the spare parts, luckily I didn't in the end.

Like this, getting my hands on a Kronos in a few years shouldn't be too hard or too expensive.

Again, my congratulations to Korg for releasing an immensly powerful synthesizer once again, although I would have liked another update or two for the lovely O..

Thanks.
Paul: Don't be nervous.
John: I'M NOT NERVOUS!!!

Yep, the best thing about Kronos for us Oasys owners is the opening up of an anticipated spare-part constraint.

Yes, it means that the life of the OASYS continues! I'm very excited about this, as I have wanted to get a backup OASYS, but not at full cost!!

It's good to know that I can work with MOD-7, the sequencer, the engines and know that my libraries won't die, if the OASYS unit does (in several years). They can continue, as Kronos reads OASYS files. I'm guessing that Kronos will be hugely popular, to the point that it will be no problem finding them on Ebay, 20 years from now. :D

It is far worse to invest in a system/style of working, only to have the manufacturer release something that obsoletes or makes your work incompatible. I've always appreciated that my Fantom can play all my XP50 songs/sounds and that my Virus TI can play all the sounds of my Virus C. Same with my TX16W samples being compatible with my SY99 and A5000 sampler.

With the OASYS, I have continuity to the DX7/TX816 sounds that I was playing with 25 years ago. Kronos continues that and I can stay in touch with my roots.
