Basic Sequencer Question

Post by BARRY CRAIG »

Hi: Again, just got the "O" recently. The manuals are overwhelming, and (to me,anyway) leave gaps.

To initialize a new song, the manual indicates you press enter+1 to get an initialization screen. But it wants you to number the song in order to get that screen which sets a length (e.g. 240 bars), time sig, which of course can be changed later. I'd like to get that screen prompt without having to number the song. I've worked with Korg synths for the last 20 years. Usually, if you don't specify a name, it comes up as "New Song."

I don't want to enumerate a song when I start a project. Is there a way to get that initialization screen (set measures, time sig) without the silly number ritual?

Thanks to whoever knows!

Hi Barry -

Congratulations on your acquisition of your OASYS.

I don't believe there's anything you can do about the issue you flag - it seems OASYS needs a song number; and that the OASYS OS has it's own mind w.r.t song organization.

I too have find it curious on occasions. As one example, imagine you have three sketch songs and you want to delete the middle one. That's fine you can do that. But if you tell the OASYS to make a new song, it places the new song in the deleted song location - whether you like it or not - and not after your old song 3. So you cannot create sketches, delete some, and create new ones increasing in song number and/or in order of creation - you have to follow the OASYS's decision making / ordering on this.

Basic Sequencer Question

Kevin: Thanks again for responding. I've been a Korg user for over 20 years (started with the M1) and moved on up the food chain.

One thing that is nice about the O is it allows for storage on external drive(s). That may help in keeping things in an orderly fashion. I don't know what Korg was thinking when it forced users to number their songs. A title (even a working one) is more recognizable than a number. Time stamp is good too. Strangely, previous Korg work stations never required enumeration. The O is a different beast.

Thanks!
Barry

P.S. I'll no doubt have more questions...

Hi Barry -

Not sure if this is any use to you. I spent about 3 years on and off setting up an optimised way of using my OASYS - both in terms of managing various program and combi banks on board; and in how to organise various types of data on the hard disk. I summarise all of this in a document I posted a few months ago:

http://www.knect.ie/OASYS_Info.html

It's totally specific to my needs of course; but you might get one or two ideas on how to organise your work. Because the OASYS is not a fully fledged operating system in the PC sense, it can be a bit cumbersome in managing data and files. The key is to make folders for various types of data and get organised from the outset; and then it is easier to back them up (no specific back up facility, instead enter disk mode -> utility -> copy (source folder) and then select the destination folder or new HD and use diskmode -> utility -> paste).

Please feel free to ask any and all questions - there are plenty of really cool contributors to this forum so there's plenty of expertise to go around. If you haven't already done it, register with karma-lab:

where Stephen Kay has astounding resources; and I also recommend purchase Mike Conway's excellent "Unofficial OASYS" DVD (I've no financial reason to recommend these - they are just excellent resources).

Cheers,
Kevin.

Kevin: Thanks again for responding. Yes, Mike Conway and I have had several exchanges. He's never mentioned his DVD, but I'll ask him about it.

Also, thanks for your set-up info--I'm sure I can learn some things there.

I'm not too familiar with Karma. I have a feel for what it does, simply by turning it off when playing a Combi and then turning it on. It seems to work best in Combi mode. With individual programs, it's mainly used on drum kits and maybe a few others.

I may sign up with Karma eventually, but Steven's approach is pricey. I've already got a bunch of sample libraries (Spectrasonics) as well as other keyboards. I may eventually get more interested in Karma once I get the basics under control.

Thanks again for the info,
Barry
