KP3 vs. KP3+ Hardware

Post by Marxon »

Hi all,

i wonder how much the kp3+ hardware differs from the kp3
I searched for a kp3+ service manual or schematics but until now i did not find them.
It would be great if somebody take some photos of the disassembled hardware. :)
Maybe there there are only small non-critical changes and the kp3+ is simply another firmware...

afaik, No hardware changes (besides a few cosmetic changes in color, etc.). Only firmware.

Hi roblabs!

Do you know if the fw is available somewhere?
Or do we have to wait until another update from korg?

Hardware powersupply input changed to 9V instead 12V of the old.
Extra ROM/RAM for those new FX, most electronics are updated, reduced (cheaper) and use less power.

Do you know what they changed exactly?
In the KP3 there was 128Mbit (8m16) RAM.
You might also know as SDRAM (or PC100) from PCs
But i dont guess there is more RAM in KP3+
The EEPROM is more interesting.
64Kbit inside the old KP3 so there might be 128kbit now.
This parts is not really expensive, and could easily be changed in a old KP3.
I really would like to read out the new eeprom (i have the required hardware), programm the dump to another one,
put in my old KP3 and look what happens.
The chances are quite good it is going to work.

Don't know, maybe you can add a bigger sample memory, add bigger SDRAM etc.? You know any other mods?
There is on youtube the LED mod, it's just simple led swapping.

BtW: When I push POWER ON, there is a big popping sound through line out and headphone out, even with all volumepots down, almost blew up the right headphone speaker.
Is the muting circuit defect? or do your kp3 have it also, this is not normal?

I just inquired different dealers for a spare KP3+ EEPROM.
Answer from KORG:
"...indefinitely not available..."
But it was worth a try ;)

Kaoss 3+ Mic Preamps?

Post by FranzK »

I really like the Kaoss Pad 3, for an "effect" it's looping features work better than most "loopers"

The only thing I don't like is the 1/4 mic input - it's not as "clean" as on the ESX - you can have feedback troubles if you don't watch the volume carefully.

:?:
Is there anyone out there with both a KP3 and KP3+ who could compare -

Have they improved the mic input ( preamp etc ) in the new machine?

Note the demo video, which features a "human beatboxer" using it, in front of a wall of speakers, or any early video by Beardyman!

They should really make a Kaoss Vocal! designed with this type of use in mind, with an XLR mic in / out, and effects that work with vocals, "hard tune", harmony, etc.

(Note Roland RC505, TC Helicon gear, etc. )

I'm just wondering when they'll finally cave(??) and release a Kaoss Pad that can actually be, you know...edited. It's not unforgivable in an FX box, but the KPro is of little interest to me since you can't put your own spin on the sounds. Things like being able to flip the axes/poles, blend different FX, an assignable slider to fade between samples and external audio (for example) and maybe a sequencer using the 8X8 pad matrix...and MAYBE pressure sensitivity. 8)

If Korg worked all those features into one box, that beast could for $5-700 to pro DJs as a "boutique" Kaoss Pad, and it would be glorious. Seems like they took a nervous step toward customization with the KPQuad but it wasn't geared up as a pro piece, and having no MIDI makes it toy-grade to us gearheads.

Quit with the "+'s", Korg, we want our Super Kaoss Pad!

BTW Franz, what do you use for VJing? I've been doing some work with Apple's Quartz Composer through an Entrancer.

There are several KaossPads with sounds that can be fully edited. You might not think of them as KaossPads, but that's what they are. They are iMS-20, iPolySix, and DS-10+. I just wish they had the arp/gate patterns of the original Kaossilator, which Korg seems to have failed to realize was one of the best features of the classic model.

Yes, editing effect patches would be awesome. Kaoss Pad Quad is a cool box, but imagine having access to all the different effects of the KP3+, and setting up combinations of those. Well, maybe that's a bit too ambitious, but something in that direction would be killer
