Copy/Paste feature input requested for PCG Tools

Post by michelkeijzers »

Dear readers,

Because of writing a manual and input from mails there seem to be some awkward behavioural issues with copy/pasting patches. I already wrote before copy/pasting patches is not trivial and it's quite an understatement.

However, I would like to have your input regarding some issues:

1) Currently it is not possible to move a patch inside a PCG. You can copy it, however, in that case references are not moved with it. I am thinking about a cut/paste option but that can get tricky when cutting patches from one PCG file and paste them to another. E.g. when programs are cut from one PCG (thus removed after pasting) it will break the combis/set list slots. Not really what we want.

Alternative:
Use regular copy/paste but add a copy/paste setting when pasting patches that references to existing pasted patches are automatically be changed. Then you can decide to remove the old ones (unused) ... or maybe automatically after pasting.

Questions:
1a) Should I make cut/paste only internally? (i.e. only cut/paste inside a file) Or use the alternative?
1c) Has somebody a better proposal for moving patches from one bank to another (inside or optionally outside a file)?

I numbered it 1a and 1b because it might be possible more questions will follow depending on the input.

This app is also for you, so I appreciate if you take the time to leave a reaction so I know what to design.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

Michel

(btw, the manual is currently 64 pages and far from finished).

Hi Michiel

This is indeed high on my wishlist for PCGTools.

What I would mainly need is a cut/paste possibility within a PCG file. No need for me to combine PCG files and cut/paste between files. That can be solved inother way, in my opinion. (would be good if you could achieve that as well, but has lower priority for me personally)

I know it might be not easy to achieve since moving a program effects possibly one or several combis and one or several setlists, but it would be what I would wish.

If I can help with beta testing, please let me know

Kind regards, and thumbs up for your enegry put into this

Thanks Ad de Roo for your post.

I could do the cut/paste in two steps, first internally in one PCG, and maybe (or never if nobody is interested) on a later stage.

My vote would be for the alternative.

I seem to recall in the Aldan OASYS librarian that's how it worked. Must give it a quick run to remind myself.

But certainly, the ability to be able to take one Prog/Combi from a PCG and then copy it over to another new PCG would be great (as long as it kept the prog/KSC references).

You could then initialise the sound in the donor PCG or keep it as backup.

Copying a combi (including used programs) already works in the current version.

Maybe I should use the alternative in a different way: having 3 options:

- Copy without removing the original (like copy/paste)
- Move (removing the original, like cut/paste)
- Ask (ask after every paste operation whether to remove the originals)
And when Ask is selected there is a checkbox to keep the clicked selection for the remainder of the complete copy/paste action.

Then everybody is happy :-)

I thought about it a bit more and I think a Cut/Paste is feasible.
The cut/paste is equal to the current copy/paste, except that it will clear the patches at the end and fix the references.

I don't know about the impact of it. I guess it will not be that easy, so what I can do is:

- Try to make copy/paste work as before (almost finished on that)
- Finish the manual WITHOUT explaining copy/paste for now.
- Let the manual and application betatest by users
- Fix problems in code/manual
- Publish it as new sub version (0.5.1).
- Add Cut/paste option
- Add copy/paste to the manual.
- Let the (copy/paste chapter in the ) manual and copy/paste functionality betatest by users
- Publish it as 1.0 since it then should be a fully qualified version.

After 1.0 new functionality will be added, such as viewing timbres inside a song.

What do you think?

@Endless: Thanks
@AdDeRoo: Thank you too... I added your name to http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... 949#461949 but I probably need several weeks to finish up some things and the manual.
