My recommendation: 2 self powered speakers on stands...(I use QSC K8s)...but let your ears & pocket book guide you...IMHO the use of 2 speakers bring out the sublime stereo sound that our SVs produce...

Everyone's answer here is spot on!!! It is true that the creative process is individualized for each person...each song...each emotion you are trying to evoke... Even though no lyric endeavor is "set in stone", there are some wonderful books on the how to structure a lyric-song that will help to see ...

FYI...I mounted 2 small PA speakers,(QSC K8s), in stereo pointed at my head and no longer have to wear those pesky headphones!!! Crystal clear nirvana...
