Korg KRONOS with Sonar X1

In fact there are even three steps.
I hope I remember them in the right order:
- installing the Korg driver (basic install)
- connecting the Kronos for automatic plug&play Windows driver install
- installing the Krog midi driver
A quite confusing driver install.
One more thing concerning Sonar X1:
I can't use the present Korg usb midi with Sonar X1c Producer and my Focursrite Scarlett 18i6 at all.
I get the connection, but the driver causes crackles in my audio recording. I needed hours to detect it as the source of that kind of trouble. Now I use the Kronos standard midi comnncetions, as I can't use the usb connection.

The Kronos USB connection has been working correctly as a MIDI input on my system running Sonar X1C. In the device manager, two devices are displayed: "Korg Kronos" using a Korg driver (version 1.13.5.1) and "Kronos" using a generic Microsoft driver. The "Kronos" device appears to be the audio so I'm assuming the "Korg Kronos" is the MIDI driver.
Slightly off-topic, if you need an INS file for your Kronos, I've created one. Send me a PM if you'd like to have it.

Whale Oil Beef Hooked
Windows 7/64.
Korg USB driver 1.13.00.03
Installed the USB driver from the DVD as supplied in the box with Mr. Kronos. Plugged in the Kronos to complete the installation.
Went to the MIDI-USB set up program and it sees the Kronos.
MIDI Ox finds Kronos as MIDI device.
Pro 53 find the Kronos as MIDI device.
BII finds the Kronos as MIDI device.
Real Guitar, Real Strat, Real LPC find it.
Kontakt does NOT.
Ansynth 5 does NOT.
Sonar X1 (both original and patched to 1c) don't find the Kronos as either Audio or MIDI device. However, pull the USB cable out whilst Sonar is running and it says
"Kronos
The above Audio/MIDI device was disconnected from your system. etc."
Well - scratch head here and see if there is an updated Device Driver on line.

Well
Downloaded and installed the latest USB Driver from the Korg web site. Installed it and BINGO - now nothing from my post above sees the Kronos. The only things that see it are the Korg USB Driver and the Windows Devices List!
No Apps recognise the Kronos as connected (not even MIDI Ox).
So, back to basics - System Restore and report this as a bug to Korg!

sorry I just read your post and actually you are absolutely correct, I tried the MIDI driver on the DVD and it works?? now I see "KRONOS KEYBOARD" as MIDI input and "KRONOS SOUND" as MIDI output device, definitely a driver issue from the Korg end, even the input-output name does not match?Carbon Trader wrote:Well

Glad you've finally got yourself up and running with Sonar.
I did a system restore and re-installed the Korg USB Driver from the DVD and I'm back to the Kronos being seen OK in some programs (e.g. Pro 53, Kore, BII, Real Guitar etc) and NOT in others (Sonar, Absynth, Kontakt).
I'll wait until the Editor Comes out (I can use MIDI to USB Cable in the meantime) as I would hope that there will be an up-issed USB Driver with it.

Sonar INS files
INS file for Kronos can be found at this link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xtq6x1
In this file, User G bank is filled with Brass/Woodwind expansion programs. All controllers are included, but I didn't bother with drum maps.

My guess is that you're using a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit apps.
The driver supports both 32-bit and 64-bit MIDI apps.
It also supports multiple clients - that is, multiple MIDI apps connected at the same time.
However, if multiple MIDI apps are connected simultaneously, they must be either all 32-bit or all 64-bit. Mixing the two will not work.
Hope this helps,
Dan

Hello Dan, I tried again and same problem, if I install the drivers from the website, none of my programs (SONAR, MIDI-OX, RECORD/ REASON etc) can find MIDI IN?? like it does not exist, danatkorg wrote:My guess is that you're using a mix of 32-bit and 64 Dan
when I use installer from the KRONOS DVD it seems to work, all programs shows "KRONOS KEYBOARD" as MIDI input and "KRONOS SOUND" as MIDI output device?
it is weird...and during those installations and un-installations I did not made any changes to software or hardware...thanks, Navid

I really strongly suggest that anyone having difficulties with setup with a computer contact the tech support department of their Korg Distributor. They should be happy to help sort things out.
In my experience, trying to sort out these sorts of issues on a forum does not generally yield satisfactory results.
Best regards,
Dan

So let me get this straight...
So according to the pittance of info I found, the Kronos will work as work as a sound card--but only output sound though it's USB cable... is that correct?
Anybody having luck using the Kronos this way with Sonar?

Kronos and Sonar
I have managed to get the Kronos to work with Sonar LE - Fcelf's INS file helped a lot (can pick the patches I want straight from sonar). I have been able to run the Kronos and my Juno-G at the same time although Sonar prefers the Kronons to control the Juno (not the other way around), which most of the time is OK.
One thing I have noticed and this is probably Sonar (or more likely the Kronos midi driver) that sometimes when you close down Sonar then the sound on the Kronos stops working (rebooting Sonar fixes it - quicker than rebooting the Kronos). But I have noticed a few times that since I have had the Kronos (which is why it might be the midi driver) when you close down Sonar - it does not always really close down (Task Manager shows it still working as a thread). This is not a serous issue, but one thing to look out for.
But it works (on the whole), i can make music and that's great.

Why would you close Sonar then re-boot the same program? Or was that a single instance (where the K sound stopped) and now you just minimize Sonar?
