Korg R3 Vs Novation Ultranova Synth.

Seriously Morshu, once again you really don't know what you're talking about here. The original Nord Lead 2 (not the X edition) can be picked up for used for $600, but it's actually rather limited compared to what both the R3 and Radias are capable of.SanderXpander wrote:Seriously, Morshu, you're all over the place again. You own exactly none of those synths, have likely not even played most of them, and at the very least don't understand how vastly different they all are.
The Proteus and M1 are romplers, from different ages. They are in no way like any of the synths that have so far been discussed. The MS2000 at least is a somewhat comparable VA, but the Nordlead 2x is at least twice the price of the other suggested options, and it has no built in fx. The JP8000 is again in the right direction, but then the TB303? What the hell? It's both extremely hard to get, very old, extremely limited and nothing like any of the other options?
I'm sorry to keep jumping on you but I figured by now you would have realized you need to tone down the bull$h!t.
And the TB-303? Are you serious?!?! It's monophonic, has no keyboard, has an extremely limited sound palate, plus you have take it apart and modify it for MIDI. Add the fact that it's nearly $2,000 on auctions...
And all this stuff about the M1... it's a ROMpler and an extremely dated one on top of it all. The original poster was inquiring about synthesizers along the lines of VA.
Again, this is a forum that people come to for useful information, so seriously double check what you're talking about before you keep making these ridiculous statements and suggestions. It's clear to everyone that you have next to zero knowledge of synthesizers other than watching YouTube videos and owning the R3 which you can barely even program judging by your daily patch requests. All you're doing is confusing and frustrating people, so PLEASE, STOP POSTING unless you are solid with the information you're giving to others.

Some things about the ultranova I do miss.
The mod matrix was great.. tons of destinations and 20 slots at that!
i wish the radias had more destinations but I do find 6 slots is usually plenty.
The ultranova also sports a ton of egs again I find the 3 on the radias plenty here.
all in all it was a decent synth.

Wouldn't trade the RADIAS for anything in the world, love that synth to death.
And Brad, wtf, ban Morshu already. He's a know-nothing spammer who upsets everyone on these forums. Sometimes I think its just ozy on a new account. I also think him and that other roodypoo, Nigel, are samefags.

You will have a much better chance of success around here if you heed the following suggestions.Morshu wrote:woah sorry guys i didnt mean to start anything
Stop giving advice about things you don't know, like commenting on synths you haven't owned.
Spend a lot more time reading and a lot less time writing.
Spend a lot more time on the gear you do own, so that you can learn how to use it. Then your advice about what you learned will be useful to others.
Stop posting new threads everytime you want a new patch. Add posts to the existing thread, and wait to do that until you have tried really hard to do the patch yourself, like at least 8 full hours of trying. Not only will you be less irritating, you'll probably learn a whole lot more, much more quickly, by depending on yourself with a specific goal in mind. When you get completely stuck and aren't making progress, then you at least will be prepared to say what you've tried, what worked and what didn't. Many of us are glad to help when someone has showed an honest effort to do the patch themselves, rather someone who just posts a youtube video of the sound without any evidence of effort. We won't make the patch for you, and we won't lead you by the hand to show you step-by-step how to do it. But if you spend some time creating a detailed post of your goal and what you've tried, then many of us will help other to progress to the next step. This forum is for learning how to build patches yourself.
I was going through this same process of figuring out exactly what synth I wanted (of course, I still look at buying synths... they're just so fun to tinker with).
Originally I was going through the battle in my head:
What's better, the Microkorg or Alesis Micron?
Then I learned about the R3 and the Ultranova, looked up the forums on which is better. Ultimately I went with the R3 (not sure the venom was out or even considered it an option at the time).
Of course, AFTER I bought the R3, I learned about the radias, which I think is WAYYYY easier to use. Having most of the knobs on the front panel is really nice and makes it fairly simple (for me at least) to figure out subtractive synthesis. It has much more capabilities than the R3 (with drums, larger sequencing capabilities (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)) and it was really not that much more money, the R3 goes for $400 to $500, sometimes cheaper on eBay. The Radias is usually around $500 to $600 on eBay.
That said, I was ultimately disappointed that you couldn't change patterns on the drums of the radias, so it was limited there and I eventually had too much G.A.S. and bought the Spectralis (yeah, it's too expensive for what you're looking for). Just bear in mind that you won't be able to change patterns on the synth like you could on an Electribe.
So, I think between the R3, Micron, Ultranova, Miniak, I think they are all similar enough that you would be happy with any of them, I think they're all pretty nice (I'm not doing a direct comparison though ATM). But if you're going to spend $400 or $500, you might as well just get the Radias.
Of course, as others have mentioned if you are just working with a DAW and don't need the multitimbrality of the radias... the R3 would be a fine alternative, or whatever else they mentioned that worked as a VST.
Good luck!
Oh, PS, check out Vintage Synth Explorer, they usually have great information on the synth you're considering (though the ultranova is not on there yet)

Not anymore, they are slim pickin's now. I'm not sure what happened to the stock, but you can't find new ones on ebay anymoreacemonvw wrote:The Radias is usually around $500 to $600 on eBay.

Man, they were everywhere a while back. I was even able to find the keyboard separately for $180 in June... I rarely use it though.
/facepalm.
Sorry for the misinformation! I am clearly not up to date!
Edit: If you look on eBay at the completed listings, they're still selling for around $600, one even sold for a little over $600 with the keyboard. Looks like, while there's less new ones selling, they're still there. I bought mine used anyway. Still seems like a better route. I'd rather spend $600 on a used radias, than $400 to $500 on a new R3.
