After getting the Kronos, is the M1R EX still worth keeping?

Post by l8rdood »

History...I had a Roland D50 plus nearly all the cards. I bought the V-Synth GT & the Roland Varios rack with the D50 card. D50 & its cards are now obsolete.
Same point....is keeping the M1R EX & it's cards worth it? I could use some extra moola.....
My Gear- Korg Koronos 88, Korg Triton Extreme 76, Korg M1R, Korg R3, Korg Kaossilator(that's just the Korg stuff)Thanks for all your help!

That really depends on what you use the M1 for.

Kronos is not an exact superset of the M1 in the same way that a VSynth with D50 card is for the D50 (doesn't have all the same waveforms for instance) so you can't just load your existing patches into it. But, Kronos is a vastly more powerful instrument that can do all the same kind of things to make similar sounds (and of course far more).

It really comes down to whether there are specific sounds in the M1 that you love and use a lot. If so, keep it as you will not find (at least not without a lot of work) those exact same sounds in Kronos.

If in doubt, keep it for six months, see whether you find yourself using it any more, then sell or not based on what you learn.

Yes. +2 It is always cool to have an extra good sounding board around. You can never tell exactly when you might need it. :)

Yes +3 - you won't get much money for these old 80's synths / expanders (at the moment) so space permitting, try and keep hold of it.
Let's say for example you like the ubiquitous M1 Piano (some do  ). I have an M1, a Trinity and an M3 - neither of the latter 2 actually perfectly represent the M1 Piano sound as the M1 (and r) have their own sonic characteristic which isn't present in their more modern brethren.
I don't have a Kronos - yet - but I dare say the same applies....

I'd say just get the M1 software and be done w/ it. Less stuff to break, and all of the M1 sounds ever released. I mean, you're not using the M1 live, right?

In my opinion KRONOS makes obsolete any other Korg Workstation,
any other next to it would be a waste of money...if you are after
Korgs Sound...i do have 3-4, M3, Triton, Trinity but my reasons
are different, i make money off of them and also dont play live.
But keeping another WS next to Kronos cuz its just Korg is useless.

Absolutely, just finished using the M1REX to make a massive layer series with the Kronos and JP-80 and D-550 and JV-1080. All tracked seperately in Logic for later tweeking. Way way cool.

You've got it, its paid for, and has a gazillion patches available for it.
Too much gear to list.

I also have some old synths but the reason I don't sell them is they are hardly worth anything (well relative to a Kronos). I use them as spare or not to move 2 of them each time to the rehearsal room and one is in the living room for just playing if I'm there and I want to play.
