Cubase and Kronos

Post by Ultimate Dj »

Hey gang,
I'm really frustrated and don't know what else to do.
I"m just trying to hook up my Kronos to Cubase 5.
Originally, I tried going through my Tascam. But for some reason, I just couldn't get Cubase to read the Kronos beyond the audio. I couldn't get Cubase to receive any midi data.
I called Korg and they couldn't help much because the problem isn't with the Kronos. But he suggested I go directly through USB, that Audio and MIDI can be transmitted through USB to USB cable.
So I downloaded the Korg Driver and got the cable...but still nothing.
My computer doesn't read anything when I plug the usb cable in and I have no idea how to get Cubase to read it either.
Any help whatsoever would be EXTREMELY appreciated!!!

Thanks a million

For one thing, Cubase will never recognize Kronos without the Korg midi driver, so it's a good thing that you downloaded it.
I would think the next step is learning how to select the Korg driver in Cubase.

I'm not a Cuby guy, maybe someone can jump in and give a little more guidance.

Hi
On what hardware and the system you work?
Computer when connected via USB Kronos - indicates that the equipment has been installed (correctly).
You have such info from the system?

I work with Cubase 4 and have not experienced any problems yet. I have the Kronos connected via USB. When you want to record the MIDI data from the Kronos, make sure you have selected the Kronos in the inspector for the relevant MIDI track you want to record to.

You can also check in the transport field on the right hand side if MIDI datas are received when playing the Kronos, independently from the track settings.

Its Windows 7 Laptop. Don't know all the stats.
I get no message whatsoever when I plug in the USB cable.

What is the inspector? I don't think Cubase or my PC is even reading the Kronos at all.
Right, no midi data is being shown on the transport panel.

I'm not really a computer wizzard (still on Windows XP32), but this sounds more like a MIDI Driver issue to me rather than a Cubase/Kronos issue. Do you have any other programs you can test if the driver works?

The "Inspector" is the column on the left side to te music tracks, where you can select channels and sounds from MIDI Plug Ins. At least that's what it's called in my German Manual.

You have to make sure your buses are configured correctly in VST drop down connections and that they are specified according to your interface. Quite honestly if you check the cbase 5 section on the Steinberg forum you will see how bad Windows 7 has misbehaved especially in the 64 bit mode. The duplex driver sucks to put it mildly and latency buffering issues are a real hassle as well!
That said KORG is right the KRONOS is not the issue. More than likely its your interface or lack there of as you have to have an interface for Cubase to read midi from the KRONOS y

I have Kronos 61 and Cubase 6 elements.

Problem midi recording with Cubase solved (somewhat)

ONE SOLUTION:
Don't add kronos instrument track. I was getting error message 'can only use one instance of Kronos' when I tried to add another midi instrument track.
Add midi tracks only in cubase.
Set Kronos to Sequencer and set each midi channel with your instruments
Record each one from cubase separately.

Also I resorted to using a separate M-Audio USB to midi connection. It has midi in/out plugs on one end and usb for computer on other end.

This means I have to save a sequencer file on Kronos to match midi song file in Cubase on computer.

COME ON FOLKS! For crying out loud... it was easier in 1985 to midi record than it is now!!!!!

Make note of this as well. The right order to start things is:
1) Boot the Kronos until it's fully loaded and ready to play on.
2) Start Cubase

Any other order will result in Cubase not seeing your Kronos MIDI driver.

You don't actually need the Korg midi driver. I'm using Cubase 5 under Windows XP and the Kronos will connect via USB with or without the driver because of class compliance. You have to select the Kronos in the Device Manager and enable it. The Kronos will appear twice in the Inspector, once for audio and once for midi so you have to select the appropriate one. You can get the instrument definition script from the new editor or a better one with PCG tools.

If your laptop isn't even aware the K is there, or, if it is, but nothing else does, use the Korg uninstall driver utility to have a look at each driver. This is the problem I had - one of them was corrupted. Simply click on something like "reinstall", and, there you are, all done! Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on...

I AM a Cubase guy, these days...I've not had any call to hook it up via USB.

...you're wanting to use the plug in, I assume? I just plugged mine in via actual MOTU midi interface and have had zero issues--acts like any other keyboard at that point.

What Tascam? You mean like one with a MIDI IO? Like the fw1884? If so, have you ever used another keyboard with it via midi?
