Kronos Help- Urgent :)

Post by subeih »

Dear All,

Yesterday I became the proud of owner of a Korg Kronos 61. I currently own a PA3xpro keyboard, and owned for a very short period M3 which didn't cut it for me.

I've got many questions and they are basic questions for now but I kind of feel lost to be honest.

1) I received one basic manual along with two CDs (1&2). Is that all, or am I missing anything, as I ordered it from Beirut and I live in Amman, Jordan.

2) When I opened the screen a colorful page screen appeared with 12 sounds on the page with several pages to navigate. The screen has navy background / charcoal background, with the sound playing yellow background. I hope you guys know what I am talking about. I want to know what is this screen for, are these like favorite sounds section on the fly. Can you combine programs and sounds on this screen. I was able to go to bank and navigate sounds the normal way ie bank a, b, c,..etc. I still want to know what this page is all about it.

3) Many sounds like piano and other stuff don't play, it shows a small icon on top saying samples not loaded or not found. Where do I find the samples and how do I load them.

4) The samples or EXI if I am not mistaken, what are they besides pianos, and if I load them all how many Exis can I load together and how much ram is there left afterwards.

5) I went to Global in order to change the scales and tried to do arabic scales, even when I detune the C note for example to -55, nothing changes while I am playing.

6) Are there stuff like a detailed manuals and other info, software that I should be downloading from korg website to run my keyboard.

I am living in Amman, Jordan and no one here as far as I know has kronos, so no one can help me. All help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks and best regards,

1) The PDF manual is found in the Dvd 2. U have to insert the Dvd into a pc drive and click "open" ( NOT play), then u will find a bunch of files , including the manuals.

The hard copy mnaual you're talking about is just a quick guide manual. Still very helpful to get things started.

2) This is the default mode you will be greeted with when u turn on the Kronos. It's called "Set list " mode. For more information about the modes , u need to watch th DVD 2 that came with the Kronos.

3) Most likely , that Kronos has been customized and wiped to be prepared to have Arabic sounds installed in it, that's why those piano sounds you're talking about don't exist. You need to contact the dealer in Beirut ASAP and tell him about it.

4) Can't help you with that sorry. Maybe someone else here will chime in.

5) Same cause mentioned in 3)

6 ) Again, everything should be in DVD 2.

Hope that helps.

HI there,

Some answers to your questions -

1. Yes, that is all you get. A fair bit of the manual is available under the "help" button ON Kronos. The rest of the manual is on the CD/DVDs.

2. The screen you're looking at is Set List. Accessed next to Combi and Prog etc on the right-hand side of the screen.

3 & 4 may be related - there's "only" 1Gig of ram to start off with. I suspect you've tried to load in lots of EXis..... as a result the original soundset isn't being loaded. The answer lies in what you've got as your Autoload.

5. No idea, sorry.

6. No, apart from any OS updates, however, I'd get to know what you've got first, as Set List, for example, has been one of THE most anticipated aspects of Kronos for the last 18 months!! VERY cool, especially if you're gigging.

Hope this helps a bit :)

I'm stating the obvious I know but please be patient. Kronos is more extensive than any other workstation ever released - literally. With dozens of synth engines and libraries and multiple modes including recording production, it is going to take some of time to come to know the Kronos (though you'll be well operation witha few weeks of continuous effort).

Identifying the Kronos Documentation is a MUST. The two key documents are the Operation Guide and the Parameter Guide (there are others too). Read the Operation Guide over the coming weeks - it'll guide you through the various hardware and software features, the various operating modes, Karma, Recording and so on.

Keep the Parameter Guide handy for later more indepth analysis of individual features. The Paramaeter Guide is well over 1000 pages in size so this gives you an idea of the number of features.

The key thing is to be patient. Everything works - this is among the most developed and testes operating systems on any instrument and it is likely that even if a myriad of things seem not to work for you that it's just your knowledge and familiarity rather than an issue with the operation of the Kronos.

Of coruse ask specific questions here too - and over at www.karmalab.com; and check out Mike Conway's OASYS Youtube demos (both OASYS and Kronos share the same underlying architecture and synth engines) as well as his OASYS DVD , the many tutorials by Stephen Kay at karma lab and the various tutorials specific for Kronos that you'll find by scrolling through this forum.

Good luck.
Kevin.

We know some of the Kronos OS is BALLS, but I'm sure that meant to say "tested"

1: Yes everything is on the two DVDs, especially interesting are the manuals. However you can download the latest manuals also from the korg.com website.

2. already answered above.

3. Yes, EXS1 does not seem to be loaded. It only contains the piano sound for the German grand. You can reload it in the global page under KSC Autoload afaik, but youprobably need to remove another EXS to accomodate for more ram space. Consider extending the RAM.

4. Only German grand samples are in EXS1.

5. Already answered.

6. Manuals are on DVD or better: download them again. You also can find the software editor there. Also you need then to upgrade to OS to 1.6, information can be found on Korg.com, section Kronos.

Subeih - I can't help you at all - but by you posting your queries, they have answered mine! I am also a new Kronos owner and just by diving into the deep end and exploring the amazing capabilities of this 'machine' makes a musician's life so meaningful. I have just discovered the layering, split and velocity capabilities with the different sounds. Haven't even touched the sequencing nor sampling capabilities yet. All in good time. I am enjoying learning the basics to give me a solid foundation before I post my creations on youtube. Plus the live band I am in are amazed at what is possible now. So, enjoy the journey on your side of this globe. And this forum also provides so much information.

Dear All,

Want to thank everyone for their replies and help.

Apparently the agent in Lebanon doesn't sell many Kronos as they are more focused on the PA3x arrangers which are far more popular. They haven't done any work on it and informed me that the keyboard was not touched or modified at alll, ie adding arabic samples or anything.

Now I would like to know the following:

Global Mode:

1) I tried to change the scale be detuning one note to -55, but nothing changed, what could be the reason or am I missing something.

2) All these sounds that come with the Kronos, are there empty slot on the program banks in order to upload or save edited sounds?

3) Regarding EXis: I see no piano exi, I don't know what others are there and how I would know if they are loaded or not. I see an EXI button on the screen but nothing else.

How many EXis are there that come with the keyboard?
Can they be deleted completely or they are in the keyboard somewhere that needs to be loaded?
What are they?
Can it all be loaded at the same time or not?
If not what can be loaded and what is the size of each?
How much ram is there on the keyboard that comes standard?

This is a massive upgrade for me and I feel lost. I know I need time, but all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

well the piano is an EXi, but it is self contained as 1 engine, that is SGX-1 engine...
Do you still can't access the piano sounds?? that's abnormal, because as far as i know, when you turn on your kronos, it will display setlist, and it will select number 1, that's SGX-1 kronos german grand...
if you still has this problem, try to reinstall your system using the DVD provided, or contact your dealer...

here's what i get from korg.com
...........................................................
Build-in Expansion PCM Libraries:

EXs1 - ROM Expansion

EXs2 - Concert Grand Piano

EXs3 - Brass & Woodwinds

EXs4 - Vintage Keyboards

EXs5 - ROM Expansion 2

EXs6 - SGX-1 German D Piano

EXs7 - SGX-1 Japanese C Piano

EXs8 - Rock Ambience Drums

EXs9 – Jazz Ambience Drums
..................................................

In total there are 9 EXs' built into kronos.EXs6 and 7 are the sgx-1 engine... I think EXs2 are the acoustic piano, but different than SGX.. maybe it uses looped samples and not streaming from SSD..

just for info, the SGX-1, and HD-1 (with all it's EXs) preloads it's samples to RAM during bootup (that's why the boot took some time)... The SGX engine preload the lead of it's piano sample (not everything, just the beginning of the sample).. when it's triggered, the beginning sample will be loaded from ram.. the rest of the sample (the natural decay) will be streamed from the SSD... somebody has posted the preload uses of ram in some thread, but i don't know which one... the thing is, the preload will eat 1,3-1,8 GB of ram.. you can unload some preloaded samples to save ram or to load another samples, but if you wanted to use them you'll have to load them again..
