X5 DR advice

Post by biodad »

hi. tech support does not involve themselves with the discontinued X5 DR so i was told to email them. i emailed korg 3 different times in the last 6 months and got no reply. typical that when it's done selling, they're done telling. i own 8 korgs, so i support korg.

* i cannot get after touch to enable pitch bends or vibrato from my X5 DR synths. i own 2, one for backup. what am i missing here?

thanks

I always get replies when I email korg support.

What may also help is to check if the manual still can be found for download if you haven't already checked this (on Korg.co.uk you can find lots of older manuals available for download).

What type of controller are you using to drive the X5 (make/model)? Does it even have aftertouch? (not all controllers do - especially models 5 to 6 years old and those under 61 keys). I would expect that the keyboard is not sending AT before I suspected that the module was at fault, either by not receiving or mis-interpreting AT.

Also, remember that aftertouch as a control (as opposed to the joystick, which typically is designated control for these modulations) has to be programmed at some level - so you want to look at the pitch and volume envelopes to see how and if it is designated as a control modulator.

In the .pdf manual I found on-line the menu section for setting up AT (response) is page 15A-15D (page 90 of manual) -- an X5 itself (as a controller for the X5D modules) can not generate AT. The X5 keyboard and X5D/DR modules can receive AT via midi but only channel AT (all notes as one), not individual note AT.

Theres also an AT curve (responsiveness) that can be set up, and I assume disabled as well, in the Global menu as part of the set up for receiving MIDI data form a sequencer... and I can only guess that an external MIDI controller board would be the same -- so give that a look, too.

[BTW: a key word searchable PDF manual is a handy thing to have on your desktop. The latest version of Adobe can run a character recognition routine that will make even older .pdf versions searchable for phases like, hmmmm, after touch.]

Good luck.

poor little thing ( X5 DR synth ) wont do it eh? oh well, it's only a few times a night i want it and i work in dueling pianos so no biggie. i dedicated the mod wheel to controller #7 for volume change.
good tip here - under some brass, piano, and other combinations, i set up a couple octaves of strings for instance, and if i want to blend them in on a chorus or whenever, i use the wheel. i also can dupe a program in combi mode and bring it in via the wheel for a solo for instance, perfect volume every time, no program change needed, back to verse, shut wheel down and you're back to rhythm volume. i drag in velocity sensitive bells, choirs that sustain and fade in 5 seconds, anything i want vs changing programs every time

you have to first go to global i believe where you can set the mod wheel for various duties, then in combination mode go to 6A-6D Midi Filter, and section 6D is where you set it up for the sounds you want to control volume over. set the modulating sounds to E for enable controll change. the controller is the wheel, the change is volume. i'll sacrifice after touch for that ability. thank everyone.
