I have now replaced my SSD in Kronos!
The new SSD. OCZ-OCTANE - 2.5 "- 64GB / SATA 2.0
Runs without any problems!
Boot time 2:20 m.

Guess I try to wait until the warranty period is over and then swap it with this (or 128 GB or more, whatever what is possible).

how did you get the second sdd powered ?

I think Im blind , or is there second power cable at the power supply ?
Or did you use an Y-adapter ?

Just wanted to clarify this before I install a second disk tomorrow.
On the other hand I could crimp a second connector to the cable.
Let's see...

It´s bit hidden, but it is on the same cable like the other power connector... just need to pull it out slightly...

Why and more important, How did you do that, if I may ask?

I thought that if two SSDs are installed, the system will boot from whetever one needed, with no need to change sata ports nor anything...

Hi Davidb,

There are two sata ports on the mainboard. The original disk was connected to one of them.
The new ssd was formatted with ntfs because i checked the disk in windows if it worked. ntfs is of course not really usable for a linux system.

After i connected the ssd to the empty port. Kronos refuse to start with 'System startup failure - disconnect all usb devices'
I think it has something to do with the bios' boot order.


Finally i changed the ports -> original ssd cable to the empty port and new ssd to the terminal where the original was and the kronos booted.

Format the new disk to ntfs and everything is fine

d) I don't think an SSD of 6 GB is even sold but why would you want to use such a small SSD while the default is 30 GB?

d) Is 6GB suppored by Kronos ? Kronos is SATA 2 which is 3G but a SATA 3 drive should be reverse compatible.

e) Which is the fastes available SSD at the moment ? Doesn't matter - the limitation is the SATA 2 interface.

I successfully upgraded my SSD to 160 GB.

This is the new disk: Intel® SSD 320 Series
(160GB, 2.5in SATA 3Gb/s, 25nm, MLC)

This is the original disk installed from factory: TOSHIBA SSD SG THNSNB030GBSJ

By comparing both, it seems that the newer is better (aside of size), because you get a higher MTTF (hours of usage before failure)

There are comments regarding the Kronos won't allow you to upgrade more than 120 GB. This was somewhat true before 2.0.2: there was some issue with previous OS where you weren't able to restore the OS to a new disk if the size is bigger than 120 GB This is not the case anymore: you can directly restore the OS on bigger SDD if you have 2.0.2

However, I used the previous (experimental) method to directly upgrade the SSD without needing to perform a full restore. The reason of this is that I don't have an external DVD drive and I don't want to get one just for this task. With this (experimental) method, you need to clone the factory disk and restore the whole disk on the new one. The end result is that you don't have to upgrade (again) the OS, there's no need to reauthorize the Kronos and your commercial EXs will still be authorized. Imagine that the Kronos (and you) don't even know something happened: you just boot normally as you did before the upgrade, but with way more available space on Disk mode.

The program I chose is Clonezilla because this is a free program and it has been reported that this one works (where Norton Ghost seems to fail according to other's reports)

It's not that easy to use Clonezilla. You need to have a good understanding of Linux and how the disks are organized (partitions, file systems, etc.). My specific workflow was this:
- Download the ZIP version for the Clonezilla Live (for usage on USB)
- Extract the ZIP on my USB and make the USB bootable with Linux (there's a BAT file for doing so inside the ZIP file)
- Make adjustments to the BIOS so it allows me to boot from the USB.

So far, this is needed just to begin the actual cloning of the disk. This is the workflow:
- Make image for the first partitions on the factory SSD (using filesystems ext2 and Linux swap). I had to use the "expert options" and use the "dumb" program which copies every single sector because the "begginner's" way just didn't worked out.
- Make image for the last partition (the bigger one) with the "beginner's" way.
- On a "command prompt" session inside Clonezilla, I had to use parted (my knowledge on Linux is not that extensive) to print (take a photo) the exact begin/end for every partition, as well as the file system on the factory SSD.
- On that same "command prompt" session inside Clonezilla, I created those partitions on the new SSD. The begin/end where exactly the same except for the last 2 partitions: 1 additional MB for the partitions which size is about 551 MB (otherwise the original data would not fit in my case) and the rest of the available space on the new SSD for the last partition. Also, I didn't set the file system for the last partition because parted doesn't support ext3 (on the Clonezilla's distro)

All of the above is to get 2 images (clones) of the factory SSD: one for all partitions except the last one and the other for the last partition (which BTW is the one Kronos shows you on Disk mode). In order to restore the partitions to the new SSD, this is the workflow:
- Restore the first image to the matching partitions on the new SSD.
- Restore the second image to the last partition on the new SSD. Clonezilla will also extend the partition so you get the full size on the SSD.

Once this is done, you just have to plug the SSD on the Kronos and it will boot normally, with the difference that you'll have bigger reported size on Disk mode.

In my case, I didn't plug the factory SSD again. I'll use it as a Ready Boost device for my computer.
