Hi all. This is the final update I have for you.
I now have my Kronos 73 back and the ram was replaced and all the keybed contacts.
They were originally pink now are blue exactly the same color as the Roland.

Also the Kronos has been updated to 1.6.
As far a s I can tell it is now working fine. Keys are much more responsive now and it sounds good. Although the top two octaves sound slightly less responsive than the rest. will investigate this further.
I want to thank everyone for the ideas and suggestions you have put up on the forum and if I find anything that is useful to me,
I will let you know.

I thought I should post this because I believe someone will find it very useful:

My Korg Kronos, 81 Keys suddenly rebooted, like 3 times because the UPS it was on had its battery drained while I was playing. I started it and it came on normally and I shut it down. Some thirty minutes later, I started it and I got a jolt, the error

"System startup failed,
please disconnect any USB devices and restart!"

came up and it refused to start. Initially I was confused and unhappy because I ordered for the keyboard from the USA all the way from Nigeria.

For your info: I am a PC technician.

I decided to open it it up and I saw that it used an ATOM computer board. initially, I changed the Solid State Drive, it did not work, I got the same error still. I changed the RAM to a new one, I started it and I got the same error still. The good thing was that it was not a power problem because the kronos still starts.

I went to Amazon and I ordered for the "Intel® Desktop Board D510MO" and a new RAM stick that fits into it. I then fit it into the korg kronos and I put back the Solid State Drive that came with the kronos initially. I started the kronos and it booted fine. It is up and running now.


My observation is that the Korg Kronos board is not resilient to power fluctuation. It is very fragile and easily "broken"> I intend to buy a spare of the board and keep it.

A fair report. Let us know if the new Mobo fails due to Ups type failures

Buy a decent ups like I did in the end preferably something with decent voltage control. A pure sine wave unit is the ultimate way to go I had issues till I changed my ups see my gear listing link on my signature some people use furman power regulators the power in some places is all over the place neon sines send spikes sometimes it can be a mess at some gigs with so much gear plugged into an old building.

This is good info...I had bought a spare D510MO motherboard when I saw that had been obsoleted by Intel, just in case I needed a replacement...but couldn't find out from Korg if any software or hardware mods were needed before installing it in a KRONOS...trojan's post answers that question: no mods needed, it's used "out of the box"...

So the next question is what's the replacement intel board? Does that mean we can easily if chosen correctly, throw in another board or better yet a faster processor ? Speed bumps are always good. Surely Intel is making boards to fit in the newer Kronos. I wonder what a brand new made today kronosx board is then?

Intel's replacement for the D510MO motherboard (used in the original KRONOS) is the D525MW (used in the KRONOS X). The new motherboard uses a slightly faster Atom processor (1.8GHz vs. 1.6GHz), but that's probably not enough difference to be noticeable in the KRONOS. I think it's unlikely that Korg will provide any updates that require the slightly faster processor and are incompatible with the non-X.

DanatKorg has already confirmed that in practice for the Kronos there's no real difference between the 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz Atom processor.
You won't get more polyphony or other advantages from it.

This is an update from the Technician who has My Kronos73.

It was sent from Wellington to Auckland 4 days ago and I received this email about 1/2 hour ago from him:-

I will email Korg re key-bed issue. It does not affect all units and depends on playing technique They are now supplying a new set of key contacts and an OS upgrade rather thn replacing the key-bed if it is an effected unit. I’ll get back to you when I get their response

Hi from a fellow kiwi in queenstown
I've chatted with the Korg tech myself in Auckland re a similar issue I was having turned out to be a weird Ups in mty case and it was random.
I forgot the guys name up there but but he really seemed onto it which was reassuring.
So you shipped your Kronos 1000km that must mean your right down the bottom of the sound island. Hope you get it back soon and all's well

Hello, i was having this same problem randomly, most of the time when i take my kronos to the gig place i turn it on and it gives me this error i reboot and all is well, but yesterday my kronos was on when suddenly it rebooted and gave me this startup error.. i tried rebooting but no luck..gonna take it to the dealer tomorrow, i hope its not smthn serious, im really disappointed, i had the karma and it never crashed on me..

My Kronos is back with Korg with a booting issue.

In my case, the error was "19,keybed".

I hope I get at least a brief report on what the problem was.

hello guys, i have good news, my kronos had this startup boot fail, the machine was on and running and all of the sudden ot rebooted and gave me the error "system startup fail, remove usb s**t", i checked the ssd on a pc and it wasnt damaged or corrupted, i tested the ram on another pc motherboard and it turned out to be broken, so i bought myself a pair of ddr 2 rams brand patriot and i installed it and it worked fine...so first thing you shld do is to test the rams..

i got the dreaded System Startup Failure msg at a gig (!). replaced RAM, SATA cables to SSDs (i have a Kronos 61 with factory installed second 30G SSD and 3G RAM), removed battery and put back in, no luck. bought an Intel Atom D510MO motherboard .

took it to Korg Service and he's telling me it's *possibly* the power supply.
i have only had my Kronos a year and it's dead in the water. i treat all my gear with the utmost care...frustrated and disappointed !

just to make sure....the lower ,original SSD goes to SATA 0 on motherboard, and the top (second) SSD goes to SATA 1...right?

FYI..the new RAM i bought is two sticks, 2G each...yes i know Kronos takes 3G max.

hope the power supply (175.00 USD from Parts is Parts ) solves the problem.

I saw your problem on another thread and it seems like you are not telling the whole story.

You bought a new motherboard and what did you do with it, did you try to install it yourself ? and now you say your Kronos is dead and then you brought it to the service center who tells you its possibly the power supply unit (PSU).

When you say its "dead" do you mean, now there is nothing going on the
screen, no red status bar, no lights around the joystick ?, then now its most likely PSU.

Something must have happened while trying to DIY troubleshooting.

If I remember it right when you first posted your problem, you were only having "system start-up failure" problem, meaning at that time your PSU was still working. And two other people on your original post seem to agree that the PSU is not the problem.

I guess, any opinion you get from this forum won't matter anymore since you have your Kronos in a Korg service center.
