Controlling Korg M50 with an external midi device

Post by TheFe »

Hi everybody!

I'm new on this forum and so please, forgive me if I'm writing in the wrong section.

I have a Korg M50 and a Roland AX-Synth.

I would like to connect those two synths via MIDI and to control the M50 from the AX-Synth, so when I play concerts with my band I could use only the AX-Synth but having the fantastic sounds of the M50.

I really don't understand how this is possible, since I don't find a section in M50's manual that explains how to set up MIDI to do the thing I want to do! :(

please, help me!!

Thanks a lot!!

- Keep the M50 at midi channel 1.
- Create one (or more) combis with timbre(s) using MIDI channel 2. You can make splits/layers for both the M50 and AX played notes here: 1 = for M50, 2 = for AX.
- Set the AX to MIDI channel 2.
- Connect a MIDI cable from AX midi out towards M50 midi in

You are ready to go.

thx a lot!! after so many times i finally managed to control m50 with ax!

another question is: I've a lot of edited sounds in prog mode. Must I use Combi mode or there's a way to control m50's prog mode via MIDI?

You're welcome ... btw, it works this way with any kind of external (slave) keyboard you would use.

I'm not sure what you mean however below are some possibilities. For all possibilities: M50 = 1, AX = 2, I assume you get all sounds from the M50 (afaik the AX does not have sound itself).
Connect a MIDI cable from AX out to M50 in.

Possibility 1
- Set up a combi on the M50, timbre 1 using MIDI channel 1
Now sound will only be heard from the M50 keybed

Possibility 2
- Set up a combi on the M50, timbre 1 using MIDI channel 1, timbre 2 using MIDI channel 2
Now sound from timbre 1 will be heard from the M50 keybed, timbre 2 from the AX.

Possibility 3
- Set up a combi on the M50, timbre 1 using MIDI channel 1, timbre 2 using MIDI channel 2, timbre 3 using MIDI channel 1
Now sound from timbre 1 AND 3 will be heard from the M50 keybed, timbre 2 from the AX.

You also can use multiple sounds from either keybed, by assigning them to the correct MIDI channels (you have to copy timbres the hear them on both keybeds), you can also use splits (2 or more sounds on a part of either one keybed), velocity splits (2 or more sounds depending on the velocity you play), stacking (2 or more sounds at the same time), and all combinations of these, as long as you can program it in 16 timbres.

thank you for your reply.
I understood the possibilities u mentionned.
the question was:

If i assigned a sound on channel 1 (m50 keybed) and another one on channel 2 (Ax). if i play on both keybeds simultaneously. will the 2 sounds be heard?
for example. if i assign a pad on channel 1 and a lead on channel 2. can i play both sounds at the same time?

Yes you can ... the pad will sound if you play on the M50 and the lead will sound when you play the AX ... also simultaneously, as long you don't exceeed the polyphony (which is high enough when only using two timbres).

No problem ... actually the AX works exactly like any other (slave) keyboard/synth.
