Storing Prog/Combi in a Setlist Order

Post by 46Fingers »

I have a TR88 that I use along side of 3 other boards in a band. I use all boards for specific tasks and parts/instruments on songs. The problem I'm having is the lag time of changing Programs/Combis on the TR88. Although I have created a spreadsheet with our setlist, and have banks and locations listed, it is still taking far too long to change the Programs this way. Is there a way to re-order Prog/Combis to make it a single push button (dial turn or INC/DEC) to have them in the order I need?

Ive considered creating Songs in the sequencer mode (since none of our sets exceeds 16 songs), and storing each Prog/Combi to a track. I would not record any music, just play in Song mode and use the function buttons to switch tracks in between songs, changing to the saved prog/combi. Seems like a work around, but could work.

Also, I am considering purchasing a midi foot controller to program all program changes for all keyboards into it. Has anyone used one of these with the TR?

Hi there, i use an ipad and an app called setlist maker. All my charts have been scanned or pdf'd into the ipad app and i have a line6 midi mobilizer interface which plugs into the ipad and has midi in and out. I go midi out from IPAD into midi in on TR and then midi thru from TR into midi in on my roland keyboard. I use the TR in only combi mode, and have saved any sounds i needed from a program into a combi. You can then program within the app either by typing the midi numbers for the patches per midi chanel or you can use the learn feature on the app whereby you click midi learn on the app, and then you choose the patch on your keyboard and the app then saves it and remembers it, you do the same for your 2 other boards and then save it for the song in your set list within the app. Once you have done this for all your songs in your setlist, it will send the midi messages to all your keyboards and changes the patches for you on all your boards as soon as your choose the next song on your setlist. Its also great because it you work in multiple bands or your setlist changes often, you dont have to worry. Within the app you just copy an old setlist, rename it and then re-arrange your songs and all your midi info is good to go as the midi settings follow the song. I used to keep my band members waiting in between songs now i'm ready to go in an instant. Best money and time i ever spent. makes gigging a whole lot more enjoyable.
Cheers
Gino

With PCG Tools (see link below) you can easily move programs/combis around in your defined order.

What I mostly do is to not use programs, only combis. So if you now use programs, make a combi (using only that program).

Then you can easily arrange it. Like I mostly use something like:

A000 Set 1 (empty slot, just for notification)
A001 Song 1
A002 Song 2
...
A012 End of Set 1
A016 Set 2
etc

With PCG Tools, you can easily move up/down programs/combis. When moving programs, all combis using that program are automatically changed along.
