MS-20EX Tutorials

Post by dongfang »

Hi Kronos MS-20EX Enthusiasts,

For the past 5 months I'm having fun in writing tutorials for the Kronos and Qui Robinez suggested that I put them on this Korg Forum.
These tutorials are pdf files. View them on full screen so they are easy to read when programming your Kronos.

Tutorial 0 - MS-20EX Block Diagram
Two Block Diagrams of the MS-20EX. Drawn slightly different than the original version to make it easier to read. Can be used to make tutorials.

Tutorial 1 - Programming a String Sound
Programming a String Sound. VCO Mixer, Swap Insert Effects. Assignment.

(this tutorial has a reference to PolysixEX tutorials. I'm currently updating them. When finished, they'll become available as well.)

Tutorial 2 - Programming a Bass Sound
Programming a Bass Sound. ADSR and VCLF. Shaping your sound with the Ribbon. Assignment.

Tutorial 4 - Rendez-vous II part 3 Combi
- Introduction.
- Prepare the Combi - Sound Setup: copy.
- Prepare the Combi - Combi Setup: new, save, copy programs, volume, pan, keyboard zones.
- Rendezvous II, part 3.
- Sequencer Setup and Play midi-file (included).
- Sources and links.

I hope you'll enjoy these MS-20EX tutorials :D
(parts of which can be used for the iPad's iMS-20 as well).

When new tutorials are finished, I will add them to this topic.
Cheers,
Kris

Sorry but, can anyone post a demo MP3 of this Laser Harp? I tried recreating
this one but its in now way even close to the JMJ Harp. Sorry for being a
party pooper but this sound to me is very i don't know how to explain,
personal or whatever you call it. I heard the one on M3 and tried to recreate
it by that explanation but also nowhere near the JMJ Harp.
This is so far the closest thing i've heard. I have it programmed on AL-1
and also on Polysix, both Sounding exactly the same. The one here is on AL-1:

You're all welcome.

@BasariStudios: I like your version very much. Do you have a tutorial on how you've programmed it on the Polysix?
Would be very much appreciated.

I'm not an experienced sound designer and learning on the way.
The Laser Harp for the MS-20EX that I programmed was the closest possible version I could get at this moment compared to the Elka synth (links in tutorial 3) playing the lower register as in Rendezvous II, part 3.
Hence, the mentioning of "Laser Harp Experiment" on the first page
I would like very much to hear your version of the lower register.
I also could not find a good version on the internet either.
Thanks, in advance.

These tutorials reflect my 'journey of learning' and are aimed on getting to know the Kronos.
Cheers,
Kris

Thanks Dong, while i was creating it i did not really write anything at the
time. If i find time i can write down the Parameters but then that won't be
a Learning how to do something, it will simply be copy and paste Parameters.
I know on the Elka it uses Ring Modulation but on the AL-1 i did not even use
the Ring Modulation, it was more of trial and eror actually.
Yours works as well, if i actually have time i will work by your steps and try
to enhance them to see how closer it can get.

MS-20EX Tutorial 5

Post by dongfang »

It has been a while, but here’s a brand new tutorial for the MS-20EX.
This tutorial explores the use of envelopes in more detail. Especially on VCO, LPF cutoff and peak, modulation and fine tune.
You will learn to create three sounds. Both are using all 6 envelopes.
One sound uses a LFO in addition.

Tutorial 5 - Envelopes on Filter, VCO and more.
Content:
- Introduction.
- Program Setup.
- The EG for the LPF (inclusive some theory).
- Fattening the Sound.
- Experiment: Modulation.
- EG on VCO Level.
- More Sound - Copy EXi.
- The Beauty Pass - Kronosification.
- It’s not a Beast, yet… Three more Tweaks.
- Play Time.
- One more thing … or two
- Summary of Settings - Sound 1 and 2 and 3.

Link:
http://dfsxpertsys.com/kronos/MS-20EX_Tutorial5_EGs.zip

This link contains the tutorial and two mp3 files with the sounds.

Have fun with creating new sounds :D
Cheers,
Kris
