New Korg Kronos 88 Crash - Help

Post by sP33DyEd »

Hi Saturday I was playing the first time with my band members and we where suprised about the warm and powerfull sound from the New K88 but after the 4th song my Kronos crashed with a black screen and white text.

A problem has been detected, which may have been caused by cycling power too quickly.

Please turn the Kronos off, wait for 10 sec, and then turn it back on.

This makes me scarry when thinking how it will crash on a live gig.

Thanks in advance for your answers will I need to return my new Kronos??

Kind Regards Edwin

I (and most people having a Kronos) advise using a UPS, especially when you expect power dips or less than normal voltages, quite typically in some countries and in not perfect gig-locations.

Not to worry, mine did that about 2 weeks after i had mine and has been fine since. I assume it was a power surge

Heck, I just use a UPS and AC filtering system on my electronics stuff as a matter of course. They don't call the power companies in my state "Florida Flicker and Flash", for nothing...... :)

That kind of behavior can happen to anything when bad power enters the equation. At a show, my Triton started cycling through patches as I was playing. It would go from 000 to 070 in a matter of seconds and did it randomly and frequently. I don't play ANYPLACE without at least a power conditioner. Problem has never happened since.
Current Korg Gear: KRONOS 88 (4GB), M50-73 (PS mod), RADIAS-73, Electribe MX, Triton Pro (MOSS, SCSI, CF, 64MB RAM), SQ-64, DVP-1, MEX-8000, MR-1, KAOSSilator, nanoKey, nanoKontrol, 3x nanoPad 2, 3x DS1H, 7x PS1, FC7 (yes Korg, NOT Yamaha).

really, so simple ?

my Kronos just crashed right now.
I´ve had another crash month ago
Both times it was when the unit was not used over probably more than 30 mins.
......it might speak for the possibility that a unclean power was the reason.
But, i have NO other gear that ever had a crash just out of nothing,......lets say that bad power distribution.
so, is it really that simple ............?

right now, i´m on my third attempt to reboot my Kronos X, OS 2.02.
the first two trys have failed.........
ok, my third attempt to reboot just failed too.........

personally i´m under the opinon, that whatever such thing like a Kronos can deliver on functional power,
the first thing to do good is that such unit.........can "run" , not ?
The advice to use a UPS on stage is shurely a good one.
.........but is it enough to point to *just* that possible reason of Kronos failures ?

.........it was now at my seventh attempt of rebooting my Kronos that the Kronos came back to live. ( yes, i was waiting each time long enough ;) )
Congratulations to whoever built that Unit

anyway, thanky you guys ! I´m right now definitly sensibilisized for that UPS thematic.......

next crash of my Kronos, with a loud noise while playing,
as describe by other people.

The Kronos, your 4400.-CHF mains-quality detector.
Buy a kronos to detect any spikes in the power distribution of your appartmenthouse,
save your other gear from beeing........oh well, these aren´t that picky

i´m REALLY glad that i don´t have to gig.........
:?

i know, everybody will tell again that in that case "i" need a UPS.
( i will hunt for one............)
but that just can´t be it................sorry

i shut down my Kronos 1,5H ago,
....powering on now failed.
the second attempt failed.

this is not a spike that just hit the power system. cause my kronos is allready off ;)
........third attempt failed.

might be that disconnecting the midcables helps.
But these are going to equipment which is powered off.
...the fourth atempt to power on worked now.
i disconnected also previously this night my midi cables. JFYI

....would be funny to see a guy on stage walking thru this procedure.
goodby 2.5 mins startup.......

It might be worth opening the Kronos up and re-seating the RAM. It has been noted by a few people before on this forum. Whilst you're about it, give each cable connector a bit of a wiggle.

a problem has been detected.............
next crash.......while beeing off for 20-30mins

JFYI
i have had a Motif ES and a EX5 running here in the Homestudio for the last 6 years ( since i´m here) without any crash...........doe to spikes in the power distribution system of that house ( appartment house )

NO GOOD

..........system startup failed........
i guess i have a built in clown in my unit, ......hoaxing me

.....system startup failed............

........attempt three to power on got the kronos back to live
( OS is 3.0.2)

You need to update your OS to V3.03, it has addressed this problem.

Thanky you narf for the Tip !
i updated my Kronos X 73 two Hours ago to 3-0-3 ( from 3.0.2)
BUT:
the unit just crashed.............

if it is the RAM, which i not gonna check bevore contacting the service center next week,
........i mean, i do NOT move my kronos,
exept a few Days ago .......i moved my kronos just on top of my Keyboardtable to get access to to a Screw underneath because i have had a sticky Key again.
If it would have been that little bit of a move ( losen off the RAM).........
i mean, how can people gig with such thing ?

and if it was power spikes, why would i have that problem not much more ?
and then again, no other electronic gear ever failed here due to a power strike.

I´m much amazed of what all i have to experience with a so called market leader, ......and a specific "model" which is since years on the market
Which finally gave me the security to jump on such a expensive horse.

ok, at least my kronos, now with OS 3.0.3  , started at the first attempt to power on.
we make progress............

ok, i now probably can live with a crash every now and then when the unit at least does power on at the first attempt.....................the user has been reprogrammed by the machine  ;)

next crash,
in direct conjunction with pressing the "drm track" Button.........

no, i won´t get tired to post here,
....i have to wait ....till i can reboot.
posting here makes for a good brake........

.........ok, next phase of the story:
at startup, the lights went out after 1/2 second.
this happens now again and again.
i see "Kronos" lit for half a second.........then ciao
........on some trys even no light.......

if this is the Ram, ........then there´s nevertheless more to it. thats my "guess"
unfunny

ok, after thinking its dead, i got again a power on...........
