If you consider Korg a Pro (I guess so you will) ... they have additional sounds they sell, and there are others too.robinkle wrote:I have to admit, even with a touch screen, Kronos isn't that much fun to program compared to a Prophet or Supernova. Makes me sad. I wouldn't mind if pro's makes sounds available for download for the Kronos, even though I like to program my own sounds as much as making music.
Make some Jean Michel Jarre type of sounds and other ambient electronica sounds. And make some 80s classic FM sounds. All hail FM synthesis!

I have extremely limited knowledge on the subject and would much prefer taking the time to learn actual songs as opposed to programming to get that sound just so perfect. So having said that, i've been playing live with a very POOR synth/sweep intro to Tom Sawyer by Rush on my Jp8000. Would love to come across that on Kronos and do it right.
Also, love some of the other suggestions put forth so far.
The minor tweaking takes the longest, and is usually where I personally fail at some sounds and have to start over with a different approach. I'm still tweaking Separate Ways by Journey, even though it sounds really great. When A/B'd with the original, it's not quite 'there' yet.
FYI, I will be including all of the sounds for Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, and maybe one other Rush tune.

Check out the MOD7 libraries that Korg made available for the Oasys... A lot of them aren't tailored for specific 80s songs, but some of them are amazing.robinkle wrote:

It's not a Kronos, but here you go!Vlad_77 wrote:For the most part, I prefer creating my own sounds. I am not usually concerned with sounding exactly like the recording - that's what CDs are for.![]()
That said, there is ONE sound that I have not heard any synth do well out of the box and that is the Moody Blues' signature Mellotron strings sound. The Mellotron string samples/sounds I have heard tend to be too harsh sounding. Pinder was able to get a more ethereal feel. I realize that effects played a part in Pinder's sound, but one would think that such would be easy to re-create.
Ahimsa,
Vlad
PS: The closest I HAVE heard is a patch from Kurzweil. Perhaps I could tweak that one a bit closer. I KNOW Kronos CAN do it, but I am just getting comfortable with AL-1 and MOD-7. Perhaps the answer lies in combining the two engines since I do not own a Mellotron to sample it.

(BTW - there are mellotron samples in HD-1. Look at the "tape" programs in the string and vocal categories)

Hey Rick,
I have your 80's soundsets for my Motif XS. Can't wait for the Kronos versions..
I have a couple requests for sounds.
Journey - Faithfully (arpeggiated part near the end)
Steve Perry - Oh Sherry intro
Styx - Come Sail Away (middle section mainly)
Styx - Renegade (synth sound)
The Who - Baba O'Riley
Foreigner - Cold as Ice (synth sound before 2nd verse)
Van Halen - Dreams
Bon Jovi - Bad Medicine
Whatever you could do that would be great! Can't wait for the Kronos soundsets you are working on!
Thanks
Dennis

For sequences
Since I mainly do sequences and play a live keyboard part, I have found three weaknesses in the current Kronos programs:
(1) Guitars - both acoustic and electric (by far the worst)
(2) Reed instruments - alto and tenor (by far the worst)
(3) Brass instruments - trumpet ensemble and solo - trombone ensemble.
As many of these are critical to all types of music, even a few good programs of each would be welcomed by many and would apply across a broad range of users.
