microX - USB/MIDI problem

Post by syncopator »

Just got a new microX. Love the sounds. Noting the fact that there is a software update, I downloaded the latest USB-MIDI driver (1.10, i.e. 1.10.00.07/1.04.00.01) & the latest editor software (1.02). I have a Compaq Presario V2552us 1G Ram, 80MB drive, 1.5GHZ AMD Sempron, running XP Home SP2.

Driver & editor installs OK. Device shows up on list during install. However, editor cannot "Receive ALL", as Also, device does NOT show up as a MIDI device.

Went into device manager->sound video & game controllers->Korg MicroX->Properties. Here, the General tab shows "device is working properly" but if you click on the Properties tab, then select the Kork USB-MIDI Driver for Windows, then click properties, a window opens up with this:

Image

As you can see-- "Status: driver is enabled but not functioning properly"

Also note the two radio buttons that aren't labelled with anything. And the "settings" button does nothing.

It's clear the problem here has to do with the MIDI driver, not the editor.

Or, I suppose something that needs to be set in a certain way on the Micro-X but that isn't-- yet I've been unable to find any indication of how you need to set the microX for the editor to work, if there are any particular global settings or whatever, except for the "Exclusive" box being checked (which it is).

I don't see anything in the editor regarding configuration or anything in the driver config program that allows for testing of the connection or anything, and the error I get tells me nothing regarding what may be wrong. In the device manager the device does NOT show up with a yellow questionmark, so it is recognized. Also, the driver config in the control panel does list the device, which shows Midi port 1-IN, 1-OUT and Status: as "Self Powered". Also, in control panel Sound and Audio Devices, hardware tab shows the Korg MicroX on the list, with "the device is working properly" but this is essentially the same place where the properties tab lists multimedia devices which when I select the korg driver & click properties I get the box pictured above...

Seriously disappointing. All this power here and I can't use my computer with it...

Also, it was some challenge figuring out where to go to ask questions. The Korg manual and readmes that came with the software had no reference to how to get support at all. And their website sent me to the page for downloading PDFs of the manuals I already have. I finally tried to google "Korg software support" and found this site.

I'm thinking I may try to install the driver that came on the CD with the product-- perhaps the older release will work better in my case. Also am wondering if using a non-USB Midi connection is compatible with the editor. IT SHOULD BE, if not it's a poor design, IMHO. If USB is the only way certain critical editor functions can be performed, it's an incomplete MIDI implementation and a sign of lazy engineers or programmers. Here's hoping anyway, as the problem may simply be USB and if I can just bypass it, it's annoying but a workable alternative.

Which raises another question-- I don't want to start editing on this thing until I can backup all the factory default programs and combinations. Anyone know how I can sysex this stuff into my computer via MIDI while I'm waiting to figure out what's wrong with the USB connection? A more complete MIDI implementation document somewhere?

Also, the version of the Korg OS when it boots is 1.0.0. Is this the latest?

Learned a little more...

Well, I was able to uninstall the Korg USB-MIDI driver and now the windows USB-MIDI driver is working with it-- including with the editor-- while the editor complains about not having the Korg driver to talk to, at least it works. I was able to get it to "receive all" and save the patches. However, it is a little finicky-- I had to power off and power on the microX after having played with it with other MIDI programs, and then tried to use the editor and it couldn't find the Korg-- after power cycling it the editor can connect with it again.

So, it appears the Korg USB-MIDI driver is useless in my case, installation of it causes the Korg to stop working via MIDI, but once I uninstall it, then the Windows driver does seem to work with it OK, at least so far...

Hi,

I had exactly the same problems. There were two reasons in my case:

-an usb hub (a powered one)
-a Creative SB 2 ZS card (and drivers)

My problem solution was the following:

-removing possible driver residuals after failed driver installations of microx software

-installation of the microx driver when the synth was directly connected to the computer usb connector (the one which I used for the hub)

-removing of the SB card (and the driver software)

-then connecting again the usb hub at the same computer usb port as used before

-possibly you have to start again once the "install usb driver" program from the start menu
(can't remember the exact programm name; not at my daw in the moment)

I'm using the latest software versions.
Works like a charm now, as vsti and editor.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info on the MIDI implementation-- very useful...

WRT the driver-- I wasn't using a hub so that's not it. And I found using the Windows driver, there are some things that have problems. When in MULTI mode, selecting channels causes a MIDI error in the microX.

I did try not using the USB to the korg at all, and using an alternate MIDI interface, which seems to solve the MIDI error problem above, but the sync process when the editor starts up is REALLY slow-- takes several minutes to complete. It is a workaround though, if I need that capability.

I have a related problem , pls see my post:

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... 399#247399

however, I don't seem to be suffering from the 10 entry issue since according to reg entries I seem to have planty. But perhaps I'm reading things wrong.

In anycase, I have to go via USB since it is not viable for me to wait that long i.e. for the patch sync process.

Any helpi is appreciated, I'm dead in my tracks at the moment.
