Should I buy a used Trinity?

Post by JohnDuff »

I have been offered a Trinity Pro V3 in good condition for €850.

Is a Trinity still worth considering today, or should I rather save this amount of money and buy a more recent synth, e.g. a M50?

Thanks for your advice.

The M50 has a much more sophisticated sound engine, however it lacks aftertouch, less good keybed and controllers (and possibly some more changes). Depends if you find sounds more important than flexibility for 'operating'.

I use both the Trinty V3 and M50 when I gig.

Trinity Pros
-Great Moss sounds
-Nice keybed feel
-Ribbon control
-Sturdy. Built like a tank

Trinity Cons
-Somewhat hard to program
-Heavy
-Old

My fav is the M50 because of how much it has to offer. Many great sounds/combis/drum beats/arpeggiator/knobs and other fun things to tinker with the sounds. But I wish the M50 was built like the Trinity. The M50 is light weight (which is ok but I have to be very careful with it), and the keybed takes a while to get used to.

So, if I had to make a choice between both of these, I'd pick the M50.

If you get a Trinity, try to get one with both the 6-voice MOSS (lots of new multi synthesis types) and PBS-TRI (8mb playback sampler) expansions. They will increase the functionality and longevity several fold.

The Trinity is cool, but should not be considered a synth with a current sound set. If that is not what you need, then by all means consider it.
