Discussion relating to the Korg Kronos Workstation.

I am interested in a sound database sorted by songs instead of downloading whole banks !

Yes! That would be cool !

Interested in a sound sharing platform sorted by songnames ?

Post by MRedZac »

Hello!

It just came to my mind to create a platform on internet, where Kronos users can share custom made sounds underneath each other !? No, not a usual platform. I am thinking about something more specialised:

While there are a lot of places on the web, where whole banks are shared, I am thinking about one, where you share sounds, which had been created especially to play a single song... who wants to download a whole bunch of sounds or a complete bank, if you are just looking for one sound for a single song, i.e. a song You are going to play with your band next week...? My idea is to be able to search sounds by song and artist name, like you are nowadays able to search for lyrics...

By knowing that a lot of us create sounds to play certain songs, why not sharing them to others and therefor being able to get sounds from the others, they made for songs already ?

After a while it might become a huge database if everybody takes part in the project and shares what he made... And of course, it should be free to use for everybody owning a Kronos and sharing his sounds, too.

Interested ? Feel free to post your comments ! Help in creating it is very much appreciated as well as additional ideas !

I think everything that is shared amongst users is worthwhile.

If everybody shares only 6 'item' per year we would have an incredibly big amount of knowledge and data.

Thanks that can be shared is:
- documentation/explanation of difficult stuff
- explanatory videos
- patches created
- songs created (with or without patches)
- software and updates of it

Michel, what I am thinking about already for this database is maybe to have some kind of connector (optional) in your PCG tools, allowing to extract and upload just 1 sound from a pcg file... You think it might be possible ?

Yes I think it should be possible. It is more tricky for Kronos OS1.5/1.6 but nobody will user it after OS2.0 is launched.

I don't have much knowledge about databases, but I can create a file from a program/combi/set list slot reasonably easy.

Funny I was thinking about exactly this when I was sitting through a presentation at a recent Google conference.
I was envisioning running this 'live' with your Kronos connected so that you could audition the sounds by pressing a button that would push the sound on your K through sysex MIDI.
Some metadata on a database with a blob for each program/combi.
If you like it, you save the sound. Probably more complex with sample sets, of which I know nothing, but harder problems have been solved.
You could also make a selection of sounds and export a PCG file.
Would be an awesome tool, and pretty simple to do.

One of my wishes is also to add MIDI sysex data sending. Creating a PCG file is a bit tricky but certainly not undoable (especially not if a sort of template it used; same way as I do in PCG Tools).

I was using this kind of software with my S90es all the time for years. It was called ES Tools build by John Melas. It had a librarian function wich let you change the patch on the S90es on your computer with one scroll down a unlimited list with patches, wich you could sort and divide in directories. I would love this function for the Kronos.

Sounds like a great Idea. To be honest I am to new to the Kronos to really contribute at the moment. As I get more experienced however I would love ot contribute.

I don't see the point. I'm mostly interested in originals and all of my music involves very specific programming for each song.. Why would I want to find emulations of sounds from other songs written by other people?

Well, the idea is to find ready made sounds for Kronos for as much songs as possible. It's a give and take principle, after all not waisting hours of time for programming a sound somebody else has already made.
Not everybody is using multiple synths, so the emulation of sounds is essential, too. Me for example, I'm playing in a band, only using the Kronos with an additonal Masterkeyboard attached. So all the sounds come from Kronos only. Most of the time, I am spending more time in creating/finding sounds for the songs we play than I have to spend on practicing how to play it... if a lot people come together, having the same problem, they can help each other out with their sounds. Even if you personally won't like completely, what you will find in the database one day for a certain song, at least you have a base sound, which can be adapted to your personal needs and eventually be reuploaded - meaning that the sound quality in the database will become better and better by time, too.
In the end, the sense of it all is not need to download tons of sound banks just to find one or two sounds fitting well to play a certain song. If we all share what we have programmed so far and what we will programm in future, it will become faster and easier for everybody taking part to find the right sound for the songs to play.

This idea is very realistic if you create the website using C#.NET. A while ago Michel has given me the source code of PCG tools to create a web version. I managed to strip his code down to a DLL which can be used to read/write PCG files.

Using his code, it's possible to:
- Split up combi's and programs from an uploaded PCG file, and store all items individually as serialised objects
- Build a custom PCG file using programs/combi's selected from the databse

If this project requires coding, count me in as a volunteer!

If this project requires the use of my source code, count me in too (at least to provide necessary changes to provide the library to be used for this project).

Mathieu is a very good web software/design engineer and he also has experience such applications (like PCG Tools for Web).

Well, Guys, i like your ideas and offers for help.
I honestly have no idea about coding in combination with pcg tools, so lets get toghether and see what everyone of us can do...
So, first questions: What do we need ? Where shall we start ?

First step is to have a clear description of the concept and features. A common way to achieve this is to make a list of "use cases":

Step 1: Which types of users will there be (an uploader, a downloader, an administrator, ...)

Step 2: For each user type, provide use cases
An uploader must be able to:
- ...
- ...
- ...

2011 gig setup: Korg Kronos 88
