Proposal for a sub-forum - Sounds for recreating songs

Hi all

This topic has come up a few times before, sometimes the discussion heads off in the direction of making it a project to be hosted externally with a database and all sorts of setup and maintenance to be taken on by one or more people.

Not surprisingly in spite of the good intentions, it never seems to see the light of day. I believe this is because like many good ideas it starts to spiral out of control, by becoming too complicated.

I think that it would be really beneficial to have a place where we can discuss sounds needed for specific songs (ie. cover versions) and a sub-forum here seems to be the ideal place. One thread per song where all sorts of helpful discussions can occur.

What do you all think? Anyone interested? Is it worth making this a poll?

1+ I think it´s a good idea. It could grow like a sound-/song-collection like the norduser-forum (http://www.norduserforum.com).

Until next week I will upload a few song-relevant sounds or combinations.

It would be helpful if all further posts will have the same structure:
e.g.
Subject [Songname]
[Description] If rombased or selfdeveloped sounds/samples are used; usage of the sound for verse/chorus of a song.
[Sound-Demo]a short excerpt uploaded on soundcloud

There are many initiatives like this, in this forum and in others (e.g., Korg Patches). I think that for this to work this time, this should become a Sticky, and folks should focus on simply posting programs, combos, etc and requesting others.

I'd see it as a bit of a talking shop as well as just requests for programs and combis.

For example, what is the keyboard sound in Black Velvet by Alannah Myles? Is there anything in the Kronos that would be a good starting point to getting that sound if I fancy tweaking it myself?

I'd say a sub-forum is best as it puts all of the stuff together and away from the general Kronos chat. It can be very informal with the only structure being the title of the post.

eg.
Subject: Black Velvet - Alannah Myes

The subject aside, the more structure that is imposed on this, the less likely it is that it will be a success in my opinion.

I think this is a great idea. I also have thought about attaching some text to patch names somehow. It would be usable for e.g. describing a program/combi and in case of a sound for a covered song, which song, how it should be used. Also usage (e.g. AMS) could be described, author etc.

However, it is not possible to add this text in a PCG file, but a sort of text file (or database) could be used. Assuming patch names are normally used uniquely that (together with the workstation model) could be the ID of each item in the list.

I could add the following items by default (per program/combi/set list slot), with some example values:

- Author: Michel Keijzers
- Grade: 1-10
- Creation date: Jan 12, 2012
- Cover song: Black Velvet
- Cover artist: Allanah Miles
- External samples used: No
- External sample libraries used: EXs11 (Austrian Piano)
- Key Zone Layout: C-1..B3: hammond, C4..C9: piano
- Arp/Karma settings: Not set
- AMS description: Sw1: Rotor speed, Kn1: Overdrive
- Usage: Trivial
- Comments: -

I also can add functionality for merging with other lists and a simple editor.

Please let me know if this would be usable (especially when multiple people will create patches like the proposal above).

How many Jump patches will there be? Just kidding.

There needs to be some sort of guideline so the requests do not get out of hand. I am not much of a programmer but this works awesomely.

Perhaps keeping as much stock as possible as not everyone has extended libraries would be great.

I would say to add a new topic for that and on the first topic make a sort of status post, with requests and/or available patches.

There should be also a description of which libraries are used. Or which samples if applicable.

I'm in for this idea. I'm always interested in finding out what synths were used in songs so I have a good starting point for setting up my combis. I'd be happy to offer any sounds I've come up with in the meantime and with some feedback, it would be helpful to tweak the ones I have to make them even more authentic.

Sounds like a good idea to me especially if an alphabetical song title listing could be used to help us locate the info easily. Kind of like a style song book for program equivalents.
