Using Krome as a Midi Controller

Post by Mikespeed »

Hi All,
I want to use Krome in Combi mode to control my Yamaha ES6 program changes. This is so while playing live I can just set the combi to the song name and the ES6 will switch to that song's program also.

Right now the Krome's combi's and ES6 programs are 1 for 1. Meaning the first Combi is program #1 on the ES6. So when switch combis the ES6 switches also which is great. The problem is when I play the Krome the ES6 plays also. How can I get Krome to not send key notes to the ES6?

Can I set the Krome to play on a different MIDI channel than Global1 so that the program changes are still sent on 1, but when I play the krome it doesn't play the ES6 at the same time. If the answer is yes, how do I set that up?

Thanks!

If you use combi mode, you should (can):

- Set your Krome to MIDI channel 1
- Set your Yamaha to MIDI channel 2
- Use one timbre in each combi of the Krome to EXT, and set a program change for MIDI Channel 2, with the program number (this means, the program on the Yamaha can be different than the combi numer in the Krome)

Also, if you connect both MIDI In/Out, you can play on the Yamaha and hear sound from the Krome (if you set a timbre on the Krome to MIDI Channel 2).

Thanks you so much for your help!!!
I think I have tried everything you have suggested. The program does not switch and I get an error on my ES6 when I select a combi with these settings. On the COMBI P3:Timbre Parameters screen I set an unused timbre to EXT and its MIDI channel to 2. On my ES6 in UTILITY I set the BasicRcvCh to 2. I would have posted an image, but it seems like a tough thing to do here.
If you have any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.[/img]

Generally speaking, newer synths, regardless of maker, have a MIDI Filter utility - Korg's is under the GLOBAL menu.

You should have the ability to filter OUT midi messages sent &/or received.

So on the korg you'd want to be SENDING patch changes, but filter OUT note data SENT.

On the Yamaha you'd want to set up to RECEIVE patch change data, but filter OUT incoming note data.

If you can do either of those steps on just one of the two it should work the way you want it to.

[This solution assumes that there are no other issues with a third keyboard, sequencer, controller pads, etc.]
