ARP Omni Strings and other 70's/80's patches

Post by Broadwave »

I've just had an ARP Omni MkI in for repair, so I though I'd take the time to see how closely I can copy the string section (no synth at the moment - It'll need a Combi) using the Kronos without all that tedious sampling business.

It went rather well  so I though I'd share it along with a few other patches I've been messing with but not done anything with (Ultravox, Simple Minds, Magazine, Numan, Kraftwerk).

For the Omni:
Bass/Cello Keyboard split preset at G3
Ribbon = Bass/Strings balance
Fader 1 = Bass Level (Switch 1 = On/Off)
Fader 2 = Cello Level (Switch 2 = On/Off)
Fader 3 = Viola Level (Switch 3 = On/Off)
Fader 4 = Violin Level (Switch 4 = On/Off)
Fader 5 = Attack
Fader 6 = Release

Patch List
000: ARP Omulator
001: Stylophone! (Hey, why not?)
002: My Tulpa (Magazine, ARP Odyssey)
003: Thin Air Lead (Magazine, ARP Odyssey)
004: Mod-7 Supersaw (Realtime Knob 5 for detune)
005: Here's the News Brass (ELO, Minimoog)
006: UV Private Lives (Ultravox, ARP Odyssey. THAT lead sound. AT for vibrato, Joystick Up for Low keyboard Sync Growl)
007: UV Bass 1 (Ultravox, Minimoog)
008: UV Mr. X Bass (Ultravox, Minimoog)
009: SM Life in a Day (Simple Minds, Yamaha SS-30)
010: SM Great Cities (Simple Minds, Roland JP8)
011: SM Someone (Simple Minds, Korg DV800 - Hold note for Auto Glide)
012: GN Vox Humana (Gary Numan, Polymoog)
013: GN Cars Sync Bass (Gary Numan, ARP Odyssey)
014: Moroder (No guesses!)
015: KW Neon Lights DMaj (Kraftwerk, Minimoog - Keyboard Split = Left Repeat Chord DMaj, Right Lead Melody)
016: KW Neon Sparkle (Kraftwerk)
017: Showroom Lead 1 (Kraftwerk, Minimoog)
018: KW Showroom Bass (Kraftwerk, ARP Odyssey)
019: Motorcade (Magazine, Yamaha SS-30)
020: Definitive Gaze (Magazine, ARP Odyssey)
021: Parade (Magazine, ARP Odyssey)

I love love love Theme for Great Cities, mostly for the killer bassline. But I now have another excuse to love it if I can get close to the keys sounds too! I'm checkin' this out!

Thank you for your hard work, the ARP Omni string synth emulation or "ARP Omulator" is just fantastic! The best string synthesizer on the Kronos so far!
I love it! I love it! I love it!

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

I've finally managed to recreate the original "vintage" 3 phase chorus block using IFX 1 & MFX 1 & 2.

It uses the Bi-Phase Modulation chorus - one common LFO running at 0.56 Hz which modulates the second common LFO running at 5.6Hz (or thereabouts)

The IFX chorus is set at -120 phase offset, MFX 1 is set to +120 and MFX 2 is at 0 - just like the vintage ensemble effect

It's quite a complicated setup but it does sound more authentic than the Poly 6 & Ensemble chorus, although it's not advisable to include it in a Combi due to using MFX 1 & 2.

1. Crumar Performer
2. Crumar Multiman
3. Elka Rhapsody
4. ARP/Solina

The above use the following Tone Adjust Settings:

Fader 1 - 8/4 ft mix
Fader 2 - Sub Oscillator Level (just because you can)
Fader 3 - Filter Frequency (ditto)
Fader 4 - Attack
Fader 5 - Release
SW2 - Chorus/Ensemble

5. Yamaha SS-30

The SS-30 uses two master oscillators that can be de-tuned:

Slider 1 - Oscillator 1 Tune (3 Octaves)
Fader 2 - Oscillator 2 Tune (3 Octaves)
Fader 3 - Oscillator 1 Level
Fader 4 - Oscillator 2 Level
Fader 5 - Sub Oscillator Level
Fader 6 - Attack
Fader 7 - Release
Ribbon (with SW1 lock) - Osc1/2 detune
Sw2 - Chorus/Ensemble

6. Freeman Symphonizer MkIV

7. ARP Omulator:

Bass/Cello Keyboard split preset at G3
Ribbon = Bass/Strings balance

Can't wait to try it out. I tried the original file yesterday and I'm not sure why (but it's most definitely on my side) I was playing chords using 000: ARP Omulator and I was getting like distortion or clipping.

I'll check all my volumes tonight.

Thanks for this great contribution!

Thanks!

I was looking for an Elka re-creation...
I see you build hardware synths also? is there a community that shares things need for creating those beauties?
