Upgrading my Kronos

Post by jeremykeys »

Hi there! Was wondering if there is anybody in Toronto capable of upgrading my Kronos? Adding more RAM and a second SSD. Been to the big music stores in the city and they say I have to send it to Montreal. All help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I don't want to send my Kronos to Montreal because it will be gone for a month, I'm sure you all understand....

why don't you do it yourself? its so easy! :)

watch this video, its not actualy about adding SSD and RAM(its about replacing the touch screen glass)....but when he opens the instrument he shows all the different parts(and he'll talk about upgrading as well_) and you'll notice how easy it is to add those things to your kronos. all you need to do is to open the K. and plug the SSD and RAM in,just like when you do the same to your PC... that's it!
hope that helps

I have upgraded my Kronos 61 myslf. I am in Stratford. If you want to bring it over I can do it for you. No charge. I have an extra stick of ram that you can buy from me for $20 if you want. You would have to buy an SSD and a short SATA cabel, about one and a half foot long, if I remember correctly. Let's make it 2 feet just to be sure.

That sounds entirely do-able! Not sure when though. maybe in the next month or 2. You're only about an hour away I think.
I have to check with some of the videos to see which cable I need. I can't remember if it is a right or left handed one. I'm not even sure if it really matters.

I slso have to check with my wife to see just when would be good and then confirm with you. She does all of our scheduling. Not that I'm all that busy but cottage time always comes first!

Also check out Sharp's youtube video (sorry - that may be one of the above links but if not search the forum for Sharp's help on this) - that's what I used and it worked out perfectly - Sharp also mentions the importance of the SSD cable-to-port positioning if you add a second drive - BUT IT IS EASY TO DO!!!!! Just be gentle and take your time and use an anti-static wrist strap or equivalent device (very cheap and worth while for any computer-related hardware changes).

Cheers

Please let me know when you're ready. SATA cables come with either a straight connector on the end, or with a 90 degree angle. I grabbed an extra one out of my computer that had straight ends and it worked fine.

As always, it's best to contact your national Korg Distributor for such information. Here's a list of Jam Industries authorized service centers in Ontario. Note that this lists the service centers for all of their brands. There is at least one Korg service center listed in Toronto:

If you call Jam Industries directly, I'm sure they'll be able to help:

What worries me about ALL of these Youtubes is NONE of them reference putting the keyboard packing in place before removing the base.
Big mistake - the keyboard will float around and interfere with the case if you don't - bad advice!

agree completely. its a simple step to wedge the 5 or 6 cardboard pieces between the key face and the bottom thin metal frame. some small scotch tape will keep the cardboard pieces in place. thats the way my 88 was shipped. I kept the 6 pieces of cardboard.

This can really prevent other problems, which you noted.

When I had keybed issues I got it fixed at Ontario Audio in Brampton you can find on Dan's list earlier. They are an authorized Korg centre and could definitely do your upgrade if you are not comfortable doing it yourself.

All SATA cables are male-male. The only SATA cables having male-female are SATA extention cables.

And yes, you can use SATA 3 cables.

If only the authorized Korg service center was not that expensive in doing such an easy operation, that would be the best way to proceed.
I understand that there is some easy job to do and than you can be much more relaxed if an authorized center does it, but they really charge ridicoulosly more.

I'm talking about my experience, korg asked me a bit less than 400 eur to install the upgrade kit on my kronos.......for much less than 200 you can do it by yourself.
