Reverb on EVERYTHING?!

Post by Daniel Kinnaird »

I'm still fairly new to the world of keyboards and my Kronos-X so forgive me if my observation is a little insiginificant...

Does anyone else find it frustrating how pretty much every single sound in the Kronos is saturated in reverb? EVERYTHING! Basses, pianos...

Do most Korg owners go through and remove the reveb from everything?

I think I've found that every keyboard manufacturer tends to add too much reverb to their patches. If you are in a band situation, you'll definitely want to take some reverb out. Quite a few of the patches use knob 8 for reverb, so you might want to start there.

When people audition patches on their own in a shop, reverb is nice, in a band situation: mostly too much. So indeed, remove a bit reverb whenever necessary.

Additionally, the O-Verb sounds so much better than all the other algorithms that I've been switching them whenever I used a patch more than once.

I usually turn it down on all patches except when I want a big splash effect.

true, but the nice thing is that you can edit to taste, and save, unlike it used to be with factory presets.

I've found that on most equipment effects are general set to the high side. I think this is just ot show off what the unit is capable of and also to let you hear the effects in the sound of a loud music store. I don't mind this but I'm use to editing sounds to get what I what. I'm glad I can! :)

It's kind of a trend thing. And a taste thing. Sometimes reverb is 'in'. sometimes it's not appropriate.. I've started to use it more but I used to prefer everything really upfront and dry.

In a recording environment though it can still be better unless you're really short on DAW resources, to record dry and add reverb later.

Delay however I often use as a part of the sound design process.

Anyway, phattbuzz hit it right on the knob - number 8 to be precise.
Go into control surface RT/KARMA mode and you'll find in pretty much every factory and most expansion set patches, knob 8 is mapped to reverb. Specifically, it usually goes from none or not very much, through to default patch level at the middle, and then EVEN MOAR at the far right position.. Not sure why you'd want that but there you go. Could be used for dramatic effect?!

It's such a handy standard that I usually program it into all my patches now too.

Unfortunately you can't save that edit because it's a RT (Real Time) knob parameter. Intended for mid performance tweaking. However if you want to save it permenantly, I'd suggest you go into the MFX section and adjust the mix level at the bottom of the MFX detail view.

I've said before on another thread that I always forget about the control panel! One day I'll get it, I hope!

FYI - if you want, you can disable MFX 1 and/or 2 globally.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It was just something that struck me as odd! Will definitely be experimenting with the MFX and alternate reverb options!

Has anyone else noticed a very unnatural decay if you set the knob 8 - reverb to zero? Particularly on acoustic piano sounds?

Reverb is cool when you have bad sounds to hide under it.

Kronoses don't need that escamotage, but sound designers maybe thought that reverb is cool anyway.

Which is not.

EDIT: corrected typo
Keep feeling good.

Funny like some others I love reverb, even built my own tune reverb, but it has a place and time and can be overdone.
