Thanks that does help I was albe to "unfreeze" the pads by clearing the part on that pad. then the sound that was supposed to be there came back. so the overlap might have been the problem. Is there any way to bulk load samples for each bank. or do they all have to be individually assigned a number ...

I figured out one part of it. The frozen keys thawed out when I cleared the part.
would still like to know if there is a way to bulk load new samples?
Is ther a way to edit the .es1 files? I know there is an editor for the esx but doee work it on the es1?

I don't think that's it because severl part keys aren't working including the 1st one in some patterns. I wonder if I confused the 'tribe by overwritting the numbers in 2 different banks with 2 different sounds. I have another post up trying to figure this out but it seems that the samples go with the bank. i.e. sound 01 in bank [1] doesn't have to be the same sound as 01 in bank [2]. I sold my 404 and got a es1. The worst thing about the 404 and the reason I sold it. is it doesn't keep the tempo. It drifts off the time pretty quick (or at least mine did) and with several samples running , that got pretty crazy.
